or We B Re Jt a » ol say Se 8 RS 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Feb. 9, 1977 Atoms defeat Bowmanville 5-4 Last Friday night at home the Port Perry -Malmont Farms Atoms had an exhi- bition game against Bow- manville. The Port Perry team squeaked out a 54 victory. Jeff Johnstone got Port off to a quick start as he scored after receiving a pass from Steven Lee. With one minute gone in the. second period, Kevin Fowler increased the score to 2-0 with a nice shot just over the Bowmanville net- minder's glove. David Kemp received an assist on - the play. A few seconds later, Bowmanville got on the scoreboard but Mike Dick- son increased the score to 3-1 for Port Perry on a very nice passing play with his linemates Ian Dickson and David Kemp. Before the second period had ended Bowmanville closed the count at 3-2. Port Perry got off to a very poor start in the third period as Bowmanville scored two quick goals to grab a 4-3 lead. Robbie Tobin then tied it up for. Port Perry as he skated in on a breakaway and fired a low shot into the net. With a few minutes to go in the game, Mike Pratt fired the winning 5-4 goal into the Bowmanville net. Howard Lee received an assist on this goal. Paul Bateman and Paul Goreski once again shared the netmind- ing duties for Port Perry in this game. On Sunday evening in Port Perry, the Atoms lost an exhibition encounter to the Oshawa Canadians of the Little N.-H.L. by a 2-1 score. Despite the loss the Atoms came up with a much improved effort from their Friday night game. Both goalies for Port were sharp between the*-pipes, namély, Paul Goreski and Paul, Bateman. The game itself was a good skating affair with both teams having their moments. The Canadians got on the scoreboard first about halfway through the first period. Howard Lee tied the game up for Port Perry. early in the. second period as his blast from just over the blueline redirected itself into the top hand corner of the net. _ Mike Pratt got an assist on this goal. The second period ended, tied at 1-1. The Canadians scored halfway through the third period for the 2-1 victory. The Port Perry Atoms gave it a good try but they couldn't come up with the equalizer. The Atoms are back in action again next Friday night. by Scott Wilbur "On Thursday, Feb. 3 the Murray Williams Bobcats Midget 2 opened the play- offs against Uxbridge. Uxbridge seemed intent to take penalties then to stay on the ice which: enabled - Port to coast to a 10-2 victory. Rick Hope opened the scoring with assists toi Oxby and Ashmore.. Mark Cleve- lapd [scored to 'make the score 2-0 but Uxbridge narrowed the gap to 2-1. Jamie Taylor potted the 3rd goal with assists to Cleveland and Fellows. Uxbridge scored to make the score 4-2 but the Bob- cats scored 7 unanswered goals to put the game out of Two wins for Bobcats reach. Rick Young and Scott Wilbur each scored 2 goals while Mike Geer, Mike Hamilton and Mark Cleveland had singles. 'Jim Treen played a good game in the nets for Port. On the following Saturday the Bobcats defeated Pick- ering 6-0 in Pickering. ~ Dave Canning opened the scoring with assists. to Fellows and Wilbur. Ash- moré_made it 2-0 with help from Oxley and Hope. Robertson, Geer, Fellows © and Canning picked the re- maining goals.
