RY A AR PORT TAR Atoms 2 two A | to Bolton in tournament By Doug Suppelsa Last Saturday, March 19, Farms Atoms travelled to Brampton to play in their ~ final tournament of the year. The Atoms met the team from Bolton in a two- game total goals series with the winner advancing along to the next round of the tournament. Unfortunately, the Port Perry Atoms lost the total goal affair by an 8-6 count. -- In the morning game, the score was 54 for Bolton, and in the afternoon encounter, the Port Perry team was edged by a 3-2 score. Vaughan McKee got Port Perry off to a fast start in the first game as he fired a hard shot high into the Bol- ton net after only 33 seconds , of play. Jeff Johnstone and Mike Pratt received assists on the play. The first period ended with Port Perry ahead 1-0. Bolton came back in the second period to score three unanswered goals for a 3-1 lead. The Port team then went to work and scored two goals 30 seconds apart to tie the game at 3-3. Kevin Fergu- son got the first one as he tucked the puck home after getting a pass from Brian Stevenson. Mike Dickson got the other one after a scramble in front of the Bolton net. But before the second period had ended, Bolton scored two more goals for a 5-3 lead. The third period was very close with both teams hav- ing their chances but it was Darren Desautels who got the only goal of the period as he moved in over the blue- "line and fired one past the Bolton netminder to make the final score 54. Paul Goreski and Paul Bateman split the goaltending duties in this game and both played very well, The Port team headed into the second game determined to come up with a stronger effort to advance in the tournament. Things looked good for a while as Jeff Johnstone tied up the two game total goals at 5-5, as he punched one home right in front of the Bolton net. Late in the first period Vaughan McKee stepped inside the blueline and blasted one high into the Bolton net to give Port a 6-5 lead. But a few seconds later Bolton tied it up again. Heading into the third period, the score was still deadlocked at 6-6. But Bolton scored early to shoot ahead 7-6. Port Perry put forth a good effort to try and tie things up but with less than two minutes to go in the game, Bolton went ahead 8-6 and the game was over. Paul Bateman went the distance in the nets for Port Perry and he played a very strong game. The Port Perry team had their chan- ces in this one but they just couldn't seem to get their game 'together. After the game was over, members of the Port Perry Atom team and their parents presented Coach Bob Lee and Manager Doug Suppelsa with beauti- ful engraved plaques: as a momento of the season. Unionville jumped info a quick 2-0 lead but Port came back with a goal by Rick Hope assisted by Mark Cleveland & Steve Geer. Unionville scored two more before Rick Hope. scored his second goal assis- ted by Mark Cleveland and John Robertson to make the score 4-2. Unionville scored three consecutive goals that deflated the Bobcats. Scott Wilbur scored the third goal assisted by Steve Geer. Annual Beare Motors Bonspiel held at the Port Perry Curling Club, Friday and Saturday last week, The popular Men's Open spiel draws rinks from all over and this year 32 teams competed for the champion- 'ship. On Sunday, March 27, the Bobcats were eliminated from further play in the semi-finals for All-Ontario' as they were beaten in Unionville 5-3, Rob Parker with two. goals. and - Rick Hope with -one, scored. for the "Cats". The score didn't indicate the play as the Bobcats had - many scoring chances but couldn't put the puck in the net. Craig Larmer played a fine game between the pipes.
