Who's who of gardening world at Brooklin Hort On Wednesday evening, March 23, the Horticultural Society of Brooklin, played Who" of the garden world. The panel consisted of Mrs. A. L. Cooper, whose special- ties are rose and vegetable gardening; Mrs.' A. B. Meikeljohn, roses and flower arranging; Mr, Michael Davis, house plants and general gardening and Mr. Hiles Carter, végetable growing and small fruits. Mr, Pope stressed that, in growing, soil is the most important element and quoted from a book by R. Milton Carlton, 'Your Garden Soil". A discussion followed on chemicals in the soil and the interest of the audience was obvious in their oral and written questions, all of which were answered quite satisfactorily, = It was generally concluded that a compost heap was an advan- tage to the garden as well as contributing to the ecology of the community. President Margaret Davis complimented the Society on the large attendance and Gordon Wick thanked the Moderator and his panel for a most informative and entertaining evening. Mrs. Margaret Beath publicity Director 100th birthday at Mrs. Annie L. Balgue will celebrate her 100th birthday on April 5th at the Nursing Home in Port Perry. Mrs.. Balgue, nee Timson, was born in England and came to Canada- at the age of 9 with her two brothers, one sister and parents. She was married at the age of 19 to Thos.- Balgue and had nine children. There are only two living. Mrs. Clarence Sweeney (Betty), and Mrs. Frank Shand (Flora). She has 16. grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 2 EL Highway 7 & 12. ~ "nursing home great great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Balgue were married in Toronto and lived there for 13 years. Then they bought a small acreage north of Sunderland where they lived until the death of Mr. Balgue in 1947. Mrs, Balgue has enjoyed good health up until the last two years. She lost one eye, but has good eyesight in the other eye and has good hear- ing. For the past year, she has been in a wheelchair but is still cheerful and happy.
