She's Suzanne Norris, the new program manager hired by the association to survey the needs of the mentally retarded adults in the area. It is hoped that with the need amply demonstrated by the survey, a workshop can be established in the Central Seven area to serve local people who now must travel outside the municipality for training. Going over some of the work to be done are association president Liz Fulford and Joan Paisley, chairman of the workshop committee. ' GUARD YOUR FAMILY'S HEALTH AND BUDGET wr : Nr OT NN AE. A special class for retard- .ed _younsters has been in operation at Prince Albert school for almost three years, a program that is described by school officials as "'terrific" not only for the retarded participants but for the rest of the students as well, . The new class scheduled for this fall will be operated at R. H. Cornish School, and although a special program will be established, students will be using other school facilities and there will be a good amount of integration with the rest of the student body. In other local develop- ments, the association is hoping to back up a Satur- day afternoon swim pro- gram for the handicapped with a regular swim pro- gram offered as part of the - school program. Grade Five students now get a three-week intensive swim program at Uxpool, and Central Seven will ap- proach the Durham Board "about extending the pro- gram to include the retard- ed According to Liz Fulford, co-operation from the Dur- ham board has been out- standing and is one of the major" reasons behind the EFFECTIVE TO APR. 16 at GUARDIAN DRUGS 7 SNOW WHITE zi FACIAL TISSUES BOXES ¢ 'of 200 YE 2-PLY SS - PKG. At the end of his remarks, Mr. Hall announced that he would not seek to take on the job as chairman for another term. 'I have been a mem- ber of the board for six years, three as chairman," he said, 'and will now move over to let someone else take on the job." A good year, but a con- tinual hustle with Provincial authorities to get funds, is how administrator David Brown summed up the year 1976. "The Province is giv- ing less funds to active success of Central Seven efforts here so far. '"'Co-operation is the key word," said Liz. The association will also approach operators of the YMCA programs going on in the Uxbridge and Port Perry area to see if parts of the program cold be taken .advantage of by the retarded. In other accomplishments, the association has avoided a potential problem by in- stalling citizen band radios in two school buses that are used to transport the retard- ed from as far away as Beaverton to classes in Prince Albert. The associ- ation was concerned that a minor accident would mean 'that "the -bus driver might have to leave the vehicle for' help, leaving students .unsupervised. Cost of the project will be paid by the local associ- ation, and according to Central Seven, a number of other associations are look- ing at the project. by S 1 pec -- OSHAWA VN VAWN ial Airport Rates (ft SERVING PORT PERRY, SCUGOG, PRINCE ALBERT & SURROUNDING AREA 7 DAYS A WEEK AIRPORT SERVICE EASTERN ) ) ) ) The above rate is for passengers picked up BETWEEN 6:00 J | ) Hospital - treatment hospitals, as less emphasis on care in these hospitals is being given," he said. ' Although some people seem to think that there is an indefinite amount of money available from the government, this is not the case according to Mr. Brown. The ministry itself has been cut back in its allotment for health care, and this is. reflected in a general cutback to hospitals throughout the province. "If we go over our budget, we will have to pay for it," Mr.- Brown said. "The pro- vince will not give us any more." On the brighter side, Mr. Brown said that the hospital is being well utilized, and the activity within its walls is good. "We are very fortunate to have the calibre of medical staff we do," he said. '"'Compared with what I have heard from other hospitals, about their staffs, we are indeed in a fortunate situation," he concluded.
