This country really cares about its children, right? Well, maybe not enough. Take the finding of a study made of seven metropolitan centers. This study found that one out of every four children living in sections where traffic is heavy had higher-than-normal levels of lead in his or her blood. No wonder. A child playing near traffic can't help breathing in dust kicked up the passing cars and trucks. There's lead in that dust. Lead is a major air pollutant. Long-term exposure to even low levels of lead is believed to affect children's normal develop- ment. Most airborne lead comes from cars. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set standards that are intended to take o ut 60 to 65 percent of the lead in the total amount of gasoline refined. The reduction was to be reached by gradual cuts made every year. achieve the 60-65 percent r The cuts were to begin in 1975 and eduction in 1979. But not a cut has yet taken place. The latest delay has co me from the EPA itself. Its most recent ruling says that the lead content of gasoline doesn't have to be reduced at all until next year. And Whyte can be extensions of the 1979 goal for some refiners. ' The battle against dirty air is far from won.
