Me Bah ARE ATA Fat Burs By Bert by Betty Deeth Did you notice that everyone you met last week was overjoyed at the wonderful spring weather we are having? The golfers flocked to the opening days at the golf courses, anxious to tee off. Of course, some were fortunate enough to have taken a winter vacation in the south where the courses attract many a Canadian Snow-bird, but there is absolutely nothing like the ° green, green grass of home. And that's something we gardeners are beginning to wonder about now, how long will it take for the lawns to dry out and green-up? I guess a person should fertilize their sickly looking lawn now: for vigorous healthy growth, but I don't. From past experience I have found our grass is more vigorous and healthy than I am by. the time it has to be cut, without feeding it. You just have to be patient, and each sunny day colours up the lawn and it won't be long before it will be a lovely shade of yellow. Yellow dandelions, that is! Right now though, the little blue star shaped Scillas are dotting the lawn here and there, especially where I changed the contour of a flower bed last year. I covered them over with sod but they poked up through the grass anyway. The crocuses are blooming and it won't be long before the tulips and daffodils will burst forth in a Spring time array of brilliant colour. I saw alot of people raking up the old leaves, grass and debris in their gardens this week. Our neighbours are busily pouring over 25 different seed Catalogues that they askedthe different suppliers to send to them. -No wonder their garden is such an interesting place to visit with vegetables like the giant 85 pound Hungarian Squash that they grow. I usually' buy my seeds at the grocery store about January or February, because it makes me feel then Spring is just around the corner. But by the 24th of May, the traditional garden planting date in our family, I can't--| - "find them, and I end up buying more. Maybe I should try the mail order system, too. Qur maple trees are still naked, but the little song sparrows are already singing sweetly, perched on their giant branches etched against the sky. Nothing is more appreciated than the constant pleasing song of this little bird all summer long. I noticed three young boys near the causeway on Easter Monday equipped with binoculars for bird watching. Scugog is an ideal area for studying many species as described in the book, "Birds of the Oshawa-Lake Scugog Region, Ontario, by R. G. Tozer and J. M. Richards. I bought my copy. from the Lake Scugog Historical Society. As a matter of fact, I observed a' pair of "Branta canadensis'. (Canada, Goose) at our pond on Sunday. Several times lately, in the still of the evening, we have heard honking overhead and it is great to have at least one pair nesting here. The Canada Goose is a very large bird and almost as graceful as a swan as it swims around, leaving a V-shaped wake across the ~ still pond. "Leftovers from last year's corn crop probably attracted them as well as the pairs of Mallards observed, also. April is a busy month for everyone. Don't forget that a volunteer will be calling at your house to canvass for funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, this month. All four wards of Scugog will be canvassed, and remember the canvasser is giving his time freely so that you can give your financial support for research, education and services to patients. "The Facts - 1977", a booklet in the canvasser's kit is enlightening, and the pamphlet 'How your Money Fights Cancer', simply states how the dollar collected for the Canadian Cancer Society is spent. Ask to see these, and give freely. Remember, "Cancer Can Be - Beaten", MAKE US AN OFFER! Port Perry, Ontario - 985-7309 PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Apr. 27, 1977 -- 15 Seek cost sharing on boundary road work Scugog Township Council will ask the Scugog Roads Department to give them an estimate about . what it would cost to build a section or boundary road between Manvers Township and Scugog. Idea behind the move is to ~come up with a figure on which to base a cost-sharing scheme proposed with Manvers. Manvers, in a letter be- fore council Monday night, states that it would be pre- pared to pay only a small portion of the cost, since most of the benefit would be to the owners of some. ten acre lots fronting on the Scugog side of the road. "The land in Manvers Township immediately east of the road under consider- ation is presently zoned for .rural agriculture," states the Manvers letter. "There 'are no existing buildings on this road in Manvers Town- ship and according to our Industrial committee Cliff Crowell, Howard -Hall, and Chuck Preston will be the Scugog Chamber of Commerce represent- atives on a special Indus- trial Committee of Council to "assist the regional plan- ning department"\ attract new industries to Scu- gog area. Council representatives on the committee are Coun- cillors Reg Rose, Richard Drew, and Jerry Taylor. Promotion Chances are that Sarnia area urbanites will benefit from a bit of that downhome Blackstock flavour now that a graduate of Cartwright High School manipulates the editorial controls of that city's daily newspaper. - Jim Carnaghan, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Carna- ghan of Blackstock, was pro- moted to managing editor of the Sarnia Observer. The 27-year-old Blackstock native began working for The Observer as a reporter in the fall of 1974, and was named city editor in January 1975, After graduating from Cartwright High School, Mr. Carnaghan completed a University of Western Ontario journalism program and worked as a reporter for the Peterborough Examiner. Hire second arena manager Scugog Township has authorized the arena board to hire a second full-time arena manager. Arena board represent- ative Stan Glass told council Monday night that handling both arenas would be too much for one person, and that hiring a man full time would do away with the need tb train new part-time seasonal help every year in an effort to prepare for the winter season at the last minute. Mr. Glass said that Larry Huntington will be hired for the position. zoning we do not anticipate any buildings to be erected on the Manvers side of the road. Any expense that would be involved, as far as (continued) Kendry, who has seen more than a few close calls over the years. "The minute the ice goes out, I put a boat and motor in the water. This is the first time we've had to pull one out this early in the year," he said. He said the fisherman was '"'asking for trouble". The boat was no more than six or seven: feet long, ..the township of Manvers would be concerned, would . have to be quite minimal as the benefits that we would :derive would be very little according to Kendry, and the hip boots filled with water could easily have dragged him under. Mr. Maljkovic said .he was on the lake for about an hour -- 20 minutes of that in the water. "I kept yelling and yelling. I didn't know if 'anyone could hear." He had nothing but praise for his rescuers. "I've to this municipality." Once a cost is arrived at, council will negotiate with Manvers to establish the cost sharing formula, Boat upsets, man rescued never met nicer people than them," he said. Kendry and Haan loaned the drenched fisherman some clothes until he could dry his own clothes at a nearby laundromat. "And I gave him some- thing to drink," said Ken- dry, "He needed it. He was purple...completely done in." Everything is shaping up beautifully for the Lake Scugog Historical Society Choir's presentation of 'Showtime', scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. at Town Hall 1873. A long time in the making the show promises to provide some excellent entertainment. Daffodil show at Brooklin A Daffodil Show, a Flower Arranging Demonstration and a talk-on Hanging a Garden will be featured at the April 27th meeting of the Brooklin Horticultural Society at the Brooklin United Church Hall, 8:00 p.m, Speakers will be Mrs. G.
