Caly ETA AR RAR Yad Ll NATL AEN "2% lack of parental support and participation. ~ Startling discovery Comedian Will Rogers, loved by all, used to say he never met a man he didn't like. This may be the'key to curing racial bigotry among teenagers in Canada. A racial report financed by the Secretary of State found bigotry in 64 percent of 255 students surveyed in seven Ontario centres, including students in eight schools in Toronto, where everyone of East Indian, or South Asian color is called a 'Paki'. They are targets of '"'Paki-bashing", a new sport in our high schools... - The study showed that the most overt bigotry was directed towards East Indians, and to a lesser degree, Arabs. The study on teenagers' attitudes, written by Janet Rosenstock and Dennis Adair, both free-lance writers specializing in education, said East Indians particularly are the target of 'the most overt racism found in Canada today." Ram Singh, a member of the research staff of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, says the immigrant SOME SAVE TAFES ... OTHERS SAVE GAS child suffers in the school system because of the ignorance of other pupils, and in some cases, the teachers. Walter Pitman, president of Ryerson Polytech- nical Institute has been appointed as a one-man task force to investigate racial attitudes in Toronto. Mr. Pitman may find a clue in the teenagers' attitudes reported by Rosenstock and Adair. In every school surveyed, except one, Arabs were as much the object of racial bigotry as Pakistanis. In that school, where the bigotry toward them was almost non-existent, there was an Arab on staff. Will Rogers, in saying he never met a man he 'didn't like, was following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ who suggested that loving God and loving our neighbour are the two great commandments. When Jesus was asked to identify the neighbour, He told a story about a Samaritan, to whom prejudice was shown. Jesus thus changed "Samaritan" to mean one who shows concern and care. By following such an example we can help change racial attitudes. Let us all tell stories about the '"good" Pakistanis and other non-whites. Jesus changed a national reputation in his day, why-can't we? Unchurched Editorials AN ChatterBox by John Mack SE I don't understand banks. I know the theory; I give them my money and they look after it for me. I think that's the theory, but the bit I don't understand is when my wife and I go to our branch we walk in the door just like everybody else and go right up to the counter, and as soon as we get there the staff all go out for lunch. : Either that or they pick up phones and embark on telephone filibustering campaigns. . Sometimes, in extreme cases, they shout, "Fire Drill!" and everyone disappears. I even remember once one girl dropped to her knees and crept along the floor behind the counter until she reached the lunch- room door. } Upon other occasions, I have stood in line for a teller, and, just as I got there, she closed her wicket and, like magic, she was gone. Personally, I think the most misunderstood people in this world are bank robbers. They just want to get their money out and they are frustrated with the T.V. ads talking about "Service" and "The Friendly Bank". * And as for "Mary", have you ever tried to get any money from Mary? HA! I was once in a bank when a fellow ran in with a gun and shouted, "Stand still, everybody, this is a hold-up!" Well, talk about service! The assistant manager appeared right away, and right behind him came the manager. I didn't even know our branch had a manager, he never came when I wanted him, But, no, there they were, all there, managers, assistant man- agers, tellers, accountants, even the computor came running out, and they all started throwing money at this guy. Talk about service, just a quarter of the service that guy was getting would have done me. It really seems unfair. HE And have you ever tried cashing a cheque at your bank, but in a different branch from the one 2 you have your money in? "Drivers license, please. ' : Social insurance card, pléase. Have you any other identification?" That's not so bad, but the total disdain with which they treat my drivers license and my social insurance card is humiliating. I know there must be prettier drivers licenses around, and I'm sure there are some absolutely gorgeous social insurance numbers, but that curled lip is too much. I have thought of getting a gun and doing the, "This is a hold-up!" bit, but guns make me nervous. I'm never really sure which end ofthe gun the bullet will come out of. I know it's supposed to come out of the tube end, but what if that's wrong and it comes out the other end? Apart from anything else, can you imagine how foolish I'd feel, lying there on the bank floor while the manager and the assistant manager, the tellers, the accountant, and even the computor stand over me all saying, "We told you to wait in line, and this window is closed, and I'm sorry, the manager's busy", and all that cute banking language. : ; Just once I wish I could find out who was going to rob the bank next. Not so I could turn him in. No, so I could ask him if he'd get something out of my account for me. It needn't be much, just a few dollars so I would know it could be done. If any bank robber reads this would you contact me at the Port Perry Star and I'll let you know my branch. As a matter-of-fact, I'd like to* watch. Apart from anything else, I'd really like to see the manager. $57 11 3 their_desire to escape_direct. confrontation. ~ Support's the word Forgive us for playing that old record again, but if you turn to the picture on page 6, you'll understand just what we are talking about. i In the past two or three years, a.number of organizations have folded in the Scugog Township area, Including a sea cadet corps, a service club group aimed at young people, and several other organizations. ] At least one of the reasons the sea cadet group disbanded, organizers will tell you, is because of a At one annual inspection, according to one official of the now-defunct sea cadet group, only two parents showed up. as ' At another meeting, this time of parents of cubs and scouts, only a handful of people turned out. At a recent music night at Port Perry High School, featuring the combined talents of groups from all over the township, the number of participants outnumbered the audience. . ; The picture on Page 6 depicts, more than 1,000 words, what we mean when we say young people need the support of their parents. At this particular cadet parade -- the annual one where cadets show off what they've accomplished throughout the year -- the number of onlookers was pitifully-small. Of those, accordin one cadet instructor, half were civilian instructors. "It.doesn't begin to cover the parents of the kids on parade,'" one instructor told us. It is a minor miracle in itself how extra-ordinary efforts by Corps promoters were able to revive the Corps after 'it threatened to go the way-of the sea cadets last year. Ce It was impossible not to notice the rows of empty chairs, and one couldnt help but feel a bit disappoin- ted as the rows of spit dnd polished cadets went through their paces on the parade square. And you wonder, if we felt disappointed, how did the kids feel? On the move Most everyone would agree that saving. the old building on the corner of Lilla and Queen was, after all, a good idea. We call that 20-20 hindsight. Just how good an idea cannot be completely appreciated until one observes the activities and the enthusiasm the new facility has helped to create. There's been few failures at the Town Hall 1873, as each new event seems to outdo the last. Most recently, the Cabaret night and the two performances of the Historical Society Choir were before capacity crowds. There are more music and drama groups here than ever before, and interest in theatre arts has obviously multiplied. Which is, after all, the idea. Tough controls needed Last year's assassination attempts on the life of U.S. President Gerald Ford spurred research into the personalities of assassins, both male and female, American and other. ¥; ) 'According to Priscilla Johnson McMillad of Harvard, a common characteristic of assassins is That means, in her view, that anything - anything at all, that will make it more difficult for an assassin to carry out the deed might prevent it. Lee Harvey Oswald might never have shot John F. Kennedy if he had to risk a confrontation by buying a rifle across the counter instead of ordering it by mail, according to Mrs. McMillan. She adds that Oswald, like the other assassins she studies, was constantly torn within about whether or not to carry out the deed.. They were not single- minded fanatics obsessed with assassination. They "were not dedicated and angry activists. Rather, they were quiet people who could not express their anger directly. , ; fren But with guns_easily available, they found a way. Nor need these guns always be used on others. A mental patient In Whitby, Ontario, recently blew off his own head with a gun he had purchased moments before. A waiting period, like the pause for reflection between the purchase of a marriage licence and the "wedding, would help to eliminate many impulsive uses of guns. & »
