160 attend Shorthorn Club annual banquet The annual Durham County - 'Shorthorn Club banquet was very success- ~ ful. More than 160 people were in attendance at this annual banquet, held in the Recreation Centre in Black- stock. 'Mrs. Gloria Philp of Port Hope, introduced Mr. John Moles, - manager of the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto, the guest speaker for the evening. Mr. Moles showed many interesting and know- ledgeable slides of the "Royal". N Mr. David Davidson, one of the clubs newest members, thanked Mr. Moles for attending the banquet and giving club members a delightful look at the inside of the Royal. Music for the evening was provided by Mr. Leslie Foster. . Mr. George Carson pre- sented Mr. Osborne with a framed picture of Shorthorn cattle and Mrs, Osborne with flowers to honour Russel on his retirement from the club. Mr. Ted Buttery, thanked the ladies from the kitchen in a humerous manner, for the fine meal they had pro- vided. During the evening, many draws were made and prizes won. Downey, Mrs. Ivan Mountjoy, Mrs. Wood, Nellie Cornish, Merle Avery, Barbara Short, Bill Short, Ann Taylor, .Roy McLaughlin, President, Bill Slater, presented Stanley Taylor with a leather key case in honour of selling the most tickets for the dinner (72). At last years cake auction the club raised $69.00, and Russel Osborne suggested that an auction be had again to help raise funds, E. Schillings CWL pres. The C.W.L. held their monthly meeting . on Wednesday, May 4th with 27 members attending. The meeting opened with Father Raymakers saying prayer with the members. The president, Mrs. Else Schillings extended a wel- come to everyone. Mrs. Elizabeth Stichmann has been enjoying a few days with friends in Florida. After a strenuous winter of teaching the techniques of figure skating, our well remembered Anna Forder " leaves this week for a well deserved vacation in Europe. It was another busy weekend for the Island people when the 'Head" U.C.W. sold lunch at the Marjorie Tripp sale and prepared lunch for the Fitchett bridal tea. Around "Grace" church too there was plenty of activity when Penny Prentice became a bride and the "Grace" U.C.W. catered to about 54 people at the reception. In the evening the Community Hall was filled with life for the wedding dance. Thurs. evening there will . be a meeting at the Island Church with Rev. Clarke, for anyone who is interested + daughter, in working in the Sunday school. On Sunday morning about 20 relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Aldred were present at the Island Church to witness the baptism of their tiny Ladiri Ann Caroline. The flowers on the Communion table were in memory of Mrs. Edna McLaren. Inthe absence of Mrs. Aileen Kane, we were pleased to have Mrs, Edna Beckett supplying at the organ again. Before the children retired for Sunday School, Rev. Clarke explain- ed the ceremony of hap- tism. He referred to the purpose of the water and recalled the baptism of Jesus.
