[2 rn You could feel the inspiration at the R.H. Cornish gymnasium when the Port Perry High School band performed for the senior grades at the public school. "You can teach 'em music until the cows come home," said one teacher, "'but there's nothing like this to turn them on." The Presid- ent, Mrs. Helen Redman ~ opened the meeting, and the business section followed. - The Historical Society Choir sang several numbers from their latest show. This Choir is a popular one, and justly so, they enjoy singing and the audience gets quite <caught up in the music. Mrs. Lucille Gray thanked the Choir. Mrs. Claudette Brock gave a Museum report; the new displays are beautiful, and if you would be interested in guiding at the Museum buildings this - summer, Mrs. Brock would be delighted to hear from you. Her number is 985-7134. Mrs. Jane Baird spoke about the Society dinner to be held at Nestleton Hall on June 5. Tickets are $5.00, Members and friends are invited, also a special invit- ation to the canoists who will 'have built up a good appetite that day. Paul Arculus led a sing song with such verve HH and energy he received a standing ovation, Mrs. Hazel Slemmon introduced the speaker, Dr. Beverley Smallman, who has received many degrees and honours during his academic career, and who was head .of the Biology Dept. at Queen's University for 10 years. He spoke amusingly of his early life in Port Perry, and his know- ledge' of the Town Hall was from his earliest 'days, "having been in a concert there at the age of six years. He felt his interest in science had developed from reading books as a young- ster, and in those days there was a library in the United Church Sunday School. His pictures of Australia and New Zealand were" beautiful, and his descrip- tions made them very inter- esting. Also his slides included a picture of Albert and Vivian Cawker, taken in Australia, (they were pres- ent in the Town Hall), and also Dr. Bill Cawker and his wife, who live in New Zealand Mrs. Ivy Rahm, who is a first cousin of Dr. Small- man, thanked him for a most interesting evening, and presented him with a gift. Mr. Albert Harper, accompanied by. his wife at the piano, sang a song. Mr, Norman Watson, on behalf of the Choir, pre- sented a cheque for $300.00 »to Mrs. Redman for the Historical Society, and another cheque for $300.00 to Doug Farndale to be used for the Town Hall, Coffee and cookies were served downstairs and judging by the numbers who stayed and chatted and reminisced with Dr. Small- man, it was a very success- ful evening.
