Port played a good game led by the. superior pitching of Phil Robertson who struck out ten batters and only gave up three hits and one walk. O'Callaghan was the starting pitcher for Mark- ham, he pitched the first two innings, was relieved and came back in the fifth "to finish the game. (He received the loss). Jack Cook had been contacted by the Summer Games committee and pre- sented the offer to the local Minor Softball Association who were most eager to host this tournament. Last year this tournament drew large crowds as the softball was most entertain- ing. Port Perry won out over strong clubs from Peterborough and Oshawa to go on to the Summer Games in Ottawa where they won silver medals. They receiv- ed their awards at the annual Athletic Association banquet held June 1 at the high school. . As outstanding male athlete Ron. Goris received the Aldred Trophy and an accompanying $50 scholar- ship. Most Valuable Player awards in several school sports were also made. Coaches of the various sports outlined their respec- tive teams' achievements during the past year, and a highlight of the evening was the standing ovation tribute paid to the girls curling team that captured the all- - Ontario finals in Barrie last winter. y Rev. Bob- Rumble, a former professional football player who has become well known for his work with the' deaf and handicapped was guest speaker at the banquet. His topic was on being "wise or otherwise," and he stressed to the students that the choice was entirely up to them. Rev. Rumble told the audience that athletics can open many doors, as it has for him. He suggested that winning in athletics is some- thing worth striving for when it is straight, clean and good. And he paid tribute to the athlete who makes up for lack of natural talent and ability by working hard and giving everything he or she has.
