The "Guild" was formally founded in 1965 with Mrs. Louise. Patterson, president until 1968 when she left to live in Truro, Nova Scotia. Louise Patterson was taught how to hook rugs by her mother when she was 16 years old in Pugwash, N.S. She became a licensed teacher from the Rittemere Farms Studio at Vineland and shared her skills with many local people. In 1967, when Louise Patterson was 81 years young she com- pleted an outstanding Centennial rug. .The Womens' Institute crest hanging in the municipal offices is one of her pieces. Mrs. Patterson passed away at Truro in 1974, but she left this community a legacy of iFaivays b hobby. She "always be remembered when it's hot and sunny. Mrs. Dolores Victor and her granddaughters were guests and demonstrated spinning and weaving. Displays of crafts spann- ed the seasons, with Ukrain- ian painted easter eggs, Christmas decorations, and bouquets of crocheted carnations on the tea-tables, The sale table was a wonderful place to get a head start on your Christ- mas shopping with knitted, crocheted and hand-crafted items too numerous to mention. There were cushions on display fashioned from Broomstick lace, crocheted in a" unique round style of variegated colours, hooked in wool, woven in a "God's Eye" design, and embroid- ered. A "Log° Cabin" quilt incorporating modern materials was outstanding, and will be an hejrloom piece. - Beautiful afghans * representing many hours of work were also displayed. Verena Sanderson, the lady with 50,000 buttons brought a few hundred for display. Buttons can tell stories too 'about "style, technology and historical events. Practical uses for macrame was demonstrat- ed by reclaiming wooded or aluminum lawn chairs by knotting new seats. Re- claimed materials were braided into a rather large rug which when finished will; be nine feet by twelve feet. The hooking display was outstanding. with "all new work having been complet- ed since the last Guild show two years ago. "Sugaring Off" by a Guild member was borrowed from the Mother Parker Food Com- pany which now owns the piece and lets it out for diplay purposes. The detail and colours of the 1974 commemorative Christmas stamp displaying the 'Creche' scene was beauti- fully hooked into a wall hanging. The Coat of Arms of Canada hooked in wool also is a treasure and work of art. Another - beautiful example of the "Norway" rug which was made, from home dyed natural wool material in shades of maroon. Sculptured hooked pictures, including vignettes of mushrooms were fascin- ating. It was a beautiful show by creative and devoted crafts- people, the work hours incalculable! - dresses...
