In addition to the Show, itself, there was a discussion by the panel from the Civic Garden Centre, , Toronto. Their Moderator, Mr. E.R. Pope and the other panel members based their discussion on the joint topics of fertilizers and insecticides. These subjects were well chosen and their message came across clear- ly on how to help and-or hurt your garden at this, particular season. They answered questions readily and sometimes humourous- ly, and this writer was not the only one in the audience taking notes, Paul, young son of Valerie Hundert, one of our Society "members, gave a demon- stration on sand landscap- ing in a clear plastic pot for the purpose of 'making cactus planting' more attractive. And it was learned that the province will reimburse a municipal- ity for administration costs based on a percentage of the total monies allocated yearly by the municipality for the program. Through grants and loans the program is designed to assist low and fixed income homeowners upgrade such things as plumbing, heating and electrical systems. It can also be available "to handicapped and disabled . persons for such things as installing grab-bars in bath- rooms, lowering kitchen cupboards and handrails, and replacing stairs with ramps. Based on adjusted family income that cannot exceed $12,500 per year, the pro- gram makes available up to $7,500 for home upgrading. The interest rate and grant portion of the loan depend on total family income, and how long the homeowner continues to live in the home after the work is completed. Loan repay- ment can be extended over more than 15 years, at interest rates not exceeding eight percent. One of the delegates who plans to attend the June 13 meeting is a widow living on pension. She stated that she knew the Township had turned down the program, and now wants to find out why. Another delegate, also a senior citizen, said he could use assistance for home and property upgrading, and added that he has "two or three neighbours" who plan to support him before Council June 13.
