On a beautiful spring evening, a van pulled in and some 'very special customers stepped out cautiously and expectantly. The "Under Thirty's Club" from the Durham' Regional Centre (for. the Mentally Retarded) at Whitby came to experience horseback riding as part of their recreation program. The excitement of the outing palled a little for some as they approached the corral where some horses were tied, and others were wandering loose. The Pinewood's instructor allayed their fears by taking the group of nine into the barn to meet some horses and foals in the box stalls. After this initial introduction each one in the group was willing to take on the task of combing the large gentle horses tethered at the fence. The instructor showed how the saddle was placed and by this time two willing riders were ready to be pushed, pulled and set into the saddle. A "first" for these young people and + an exciting time. Each had a turn amid squeals of mp mY happiness and fear intermingled at times. For some, it was a show of great courage to even touch the animals. Others, like Shirley, had several turns, even though her hands were white from holding on to the saddle horn as the instructor ran alongside guiding the horse. ; And the drama? These young people who live at the Durham Centre are being well looked after by this government institution, The counsellors who accom- panied them to Pinewood were young people of great compassion and patience. Retarded individuals have feelings and emotions just like anyone else and so they are taken out of the institution as much as possible to expose them to normal living experiences. Joe, a member of the group, with a little help, found he could cinch a saddle. He likes to comb "Raider" and he hesitantly got into the saddle the first time. At the finish of the second ride around the corral, he exclaimed, 'This is the best time I have ever had in all my life." : A heartfelt expression that made the Pinewood's instructor and the counsellors know all the hard work had been worth it. . MUSEUM TOUR The first school tour of the year visited the Scugog Shores Museum on June 2. These were children from grades two and three at Westmount School in Oshawa. Volunteers were appropriately dressed in century old - styles and acted as guides at the log cabin, the Lee - house, the church and Emporium buildings. Mrs. Dolores Victor, spinning wool in the corner of the log cabin was an added feature and the children were very interested and asked many questions about this craft. FLOWERS OF HOPE How are your Giant Sunny Marigolds? Everyone received a package in the mail, courtesy of the Central Seven Association for the retarded. Did you plant them? More important, did you remember to send along a contribution to help in the work being done by the local association?
