The workshop was held in the Town Hall on Inkle Weaving, and featured Mrs. Edda Bowman as the in- structor. The inkle loom, which is a very simple loom, derives its name from the Scottish word "inkle"; which means narrow band or strip. On this loom the shed is made "with the assistance of string heddles attached to the loom. The warp is wrapped around the loom in a con- tinuous band. The fabric produced by this loom is warp-faced; that is, the weft does not show in the body of the fabric. There- fore, the pattern building is done entirely with the warp. The warp may be made of cotton, linen, wool, or nylon. For beginners three-or four-ply wool is the simplest to weave. The woven strips can be used for neckties, belts and strips of braid. The width of the strips can vary from very narrow to three and four inches wide. Strips may be sewn to- gether to make wide strips of fabric for scarves, rugs, handbags, pillow covers, throws, skirts, jackets, and coats. There are three basic patterns in inkle weaving: vertical stripe, horizontal stripe, and checkerboard. Patterns are indicated on a graph to aid in setting up the loom. Everyone was encouraged JT Tr to try this beautiful craft on the looms that Mrs. Bow- man had brought with her and they found that it was easy and enjoyable. There were also two films shown during the evening with - instructions on how to construct simple home-style looms. The quilt made by the members -- '"'Grandma's Flower Garden' was on dis- play on Wednesday night and tickets will soon be available to the public. The quilt will be displayed very shortly at Brock's on Queen St. through the kindness of Mrs. Brock, and the Guild would like to thank her very much for this opportunity. The draw for this quilt will take place on October 22 at 5 p.m. at the Fall Festival of Crafts, Town Hall, Port Perry. The evening concluded with lemonade and fancy cakes graciously served by the Refreshment Commit- tee. The Guild would like to extend best wishes to its members for an enjoyable summer and we are looking forward to meeting with you again in September.
