A little time and pre-planning is neces-: sary, whether it's a long weekend trip or a three week holiday, BEFORE YOU LEAVE Make sure that you have stopped milk, newspaper and other deliveries and ask a neighbour to keep adver- - tising circulars off your porch. Leave the window shades raised and arrange to have your lawn mowed., Prowlers watch for such tip- offs. You can also arrange with your local post office to hold all mail deliveries. Lock windows and doors when you leave the house and don't forget the base- ment windows and entran- ces. Be sure to shut off gas and water at the main valves and, unless the refri- " gerator or freezer is to be left on, shut off electricity at the master switch. If you are leaving the current on, disconnect lamps and appli- ances at the wall outlets. If the refrigerator is discon- nected, leave the door open to prevent mold. SUPER 'thoroughly, Inform the police how long your house will be vacant. Many departments will take a number and address where you can be reached in case of emergency. Have your car serviced paying close at- tention to the safety features such as lights, brakes, tires, steering and windshield wipers, Put a first aid kit, flashlight, and fire extin- guisher in the car and a supply of minor bits and pieces that frequently break and stop you on the road. If you've got a fan belt, radi- ator hoses, points, plugs and fuses with you, any service station can install them to get you going. ON THE TRIP Plan your trip in advance so that you are not covering too many miles in one day. On super highways, a con- stant speed can make you drowsy. Vary your speed and make frequent stops for coffee and to stretch your legs. If you are travell another province or state, remember that not all signs and signals are uniform. Don't try to crowd a year's exercise into two or three weeks. Take the sun in easy doses. Wear your sun glasses and don't nap in the sun, The Ontario Safety League cautions vacationers that alcohol is as much a problem in outdoor activ- ities as it is in driving. Stay out of the water for at least an hour after eating, and swim in sight of others, using the buddy system. Be sure that the water is deep enough and free of obstruc- tions before diving. And' don't try to swim too far. When boating, distribute the load evenly and 'wear PFD's (Personal Floatation Devices). Don't stand up... even when fishing. Check the weather before going far on a large lake. Remémber, it is dangerous and illegal to operate motor boats in wimming areas. Most boats won't sink, so stay Inexperience, overcon- fidence, carelessness, dis- regard for the weather, lack of responsibility and neglect in taking normal precaut- ions are the general factors that cause the majority of drowning fatalities from pleasure boats. The Ontario Safety League's Outdoor Recreat- ion Department reports that during the 1976 season there were 98 drownings from with it until help comes if it capsizes. When hiking, watch that the children don't sample strange berries or touch un- familiar plants. Wear good hiking boots and be 'sure of your footing when climbing. The barbeque can be fun, but also dangerous. Don't squirt lighting fuel on coals that have started to burn. And don't use the barbecue as a source of heat for campers and tents. The coals emit dangerous carbon monoxide. If you follow these tips from the Ontario Safety League, you should have a safe and happy vacation. Almost 90 per cent of those drowned were not wearing lifejackets, 53 per cent were under 30 years-of- age, 44 per cent were canoe- ists and 70 per cent of the drownings were attributable to capsizing or swamping. Many novice boaters feel that operating an outboard motorboat or a small cruiser is as easy as driving a car. They overlook the fact that pavement does not make waves that can cause tip- ping or swamping. Many ignore the fact that courtesy on our waterways is entirely different than courtesy on our roadways because more variables are involved. It is evident that too many canoeists are attempting to venture out in situations for which they have little exper- ience. Above any other type of pleasure boat operator, a canpeist must be thoroughly knowledgeable about his sport, take greater pre- cautions and be constantly "aware of changing weather conditions. The League believes all boating and canoeing en- thusiasts should take safety courses for the craft they will be operating this sum- mer and reminds everyone to wear a life jacket if there is any doubt about weather or water stability. For canoeists, the Ontario Safety League's Canoe- Camping Demonstration Units will again be operat- ing in Algonquin Park, with two teams offering instruct- ion on a daily basis, seven days each week. The teams will be in the park from July 1 to August 14 at Lake of Two Rivers. All park en- trances will be able to offer information about the OSL Unit. For the cruiser class of pleasure boats, enthusiasts will find courses operated by the Canadian Power Squad- rons in most boating com- munities.
