There are presently three homes for the aged operat- ed by the region in Oshawa, Whitby and Beaverton, and the one under consideration last week would serve citizens east of the Oshawa area. Figures released indicate there are 250 persons waiting for admission to the homes. Social services chairman Reg Rose pointed out that there is about $250,000 in the 1977 budget to buy land for the home with the price range of sites under con- sideration from $125,000 to $375,000 for four acres. However, councillor Rose added that construction could not realistically start for at least three years as provincial spending re- straints have curtailed funds for, construction of seniors housing, and the region could not afford the full price on its own. Proceeds from the outing are divided between the two lady's church groups and we togetherness. Travelways bus driver and the 48 ladies chattered animatedly all the way to Hamilton, where we were actually 30 minutes early to tour the Dundern Castle. The group was divided into 12 to a guide (dressed as a servant of 1850's) and the tour commenced. With the Union Jack flying overhead, we entered the pillared doorway and marvelled at the magnifi- cent, perfectly balanced, priceless walnut staircase, covered with a blue fleur-de-lis carpet. The drawing room was resplendent with rose toned furniture and heavy velour drapes and a back-to-back sofa, ladies on one side, gentlemen on the other. The dining room was dominated by a huge table that would seat at least 22 people for a formal dinner. A gold and crystal chandelier which would give off soft candlelight was beautifully decorated with Wedgewood figurines. On the table was a silver Epergne (standing candelabra) and fruit dish which had been presented to Sir Allan Napier MacNab, owner of Dundern, by the City of Hamilton for 25 years of service. Sir Allan was Prime Minister of the Province of Canada, 1854-1856. From the balcony,. outside the windows of the Master Bedroom, he watched the completion of the Great Western Railway in 1855. For the whole story of this remarkable Canadian, be sure to visit the upstairs museum. The first floor splendour and the second floor bedrooms were restored in 1967 with great .care and attention to authenticity. The wallpaper in Sir Allan's bedroom is a replica of the original design. The hand-painted imitation marble in the upper hall was found under several layers of paint at the time of patterned after the style of the 1850's. Primitive plumbing brought water to the "Abolu- tions' room where it was heated on a small stove for use in the tin bathtub and blue and white Doulton porcelain sink. Several large built-in copper boilers in the basement work rooms supplied hot water for the laundry and kitchen needs. The "dumb waiter" in the butler's first floor pantry, was used to send food from the kitchen and the dirty dishes were returned to the scullery for washing. Various irons, and especially one that weighed 24 pounds made us thankful for drip-dry clothes today. I found the basement work rooms and servant's quarters to be most interesting. There was a huge ice-pit beside the dairy room; a fireproof vault for Sir Allan's papers, a wine cellar and brewery for beer. The kitchen, so primative with its cooking fireplaces and ingenious reflector ovens and 'Jack Spit" for meat roasting. The blue and white porcelain dishes were exact replicas of those originally used in the home, authenticated by pieces dug up during the restoration. Candlemaking is sometimes demon- strated there. At Christmas, the Garden Club of Hamilton decorates this magnificent home and special programs are presented. iN Musical programs are featured in the Courtyard and for the children there are puppet shows and plays in the Cockpit Theatre during the summer. For example, '"T'schaikowsky' Dance & Mime is featured several times in July and '"'Summier Dream" Mozart, Dance & Mime in August by the Opus Productions. A visit to Hamilton has much to offer the sightseer. Dundern Castle is Canada's largest restored 19th Century mansion. The Royal Botanical Gardens has 1900 acres of forest trails, formal gardens and the famous Rock Garden. Hess Village, 'where we had lunch offers shopping in a 19th century restored village. The tour ge ough the VanVeldhuis Greenhouses, Dundas, the Cactus Capital of Canada was a pleasant stroll among the flowers despite the rain. The visit resulted in odd shaped carefully wrapped parcels being stowed on the bus. At Niagara-on-the-Lake we had time to browse in the shops, have dinner and go to the Festival Theatre to see "The Millionairess' by George Bernard Shaw. Michael Ball who played Alastair Fitzfassenden can be seen on a T.V. shampoo commercial, but looked much younger in this production. Carol Shelley was superb in. the female lead, easily handling the volumnous dialogue, and the Judo. This play was used by G.B. Shaw to present a social comment on the Pook Working class and the spoiled monied class prior 1935. The trip was great fun and the drive home was understandingly quiet, for the weary were sleeping. all benefit greatly from the travel, sight-seeing and The lone male on the trip of July 7, was the . restoration.
