It was Thursday August 4 when mysterious ghosts and goblins were sighted haunt- ing the main street of Blackstock! Has everyone been bewitched or was it really October 31 on August 4? Moans and groans and blood curdling screams could be heard drifting from a recording in the gym where ogres, princesses, monsters and ghosts huddl- ed around a single blue lamp." Even the odd ghost could be heard clanging mysteriously behind the gym door. Later these terrors of the night (and day) could be seen bobbing for apples. When the moon was full the ghosts and goblins were spotted watch- ing a Walt Disney Film "Trick or Treat' where Donald Duck learned not to be stingy. Obviously, we had a great "Hallowe'en party. Tuesday was our Back- ward Day. Despite a few "problems" with the boys visiting the men's room we all had '"'emit doog a". Once again Playground will come to an end with a parade and penny carnival. And all in fun it was, of course. The annual Scugog Superstars contest featured five members of the Scugog Township council, including the mayor, and a member of the local Works Department, battling their way through a variety of crowd-pleasing events for that dubious honour of being Scugog Superstar for 1977. When it was over, when the dust had cleared, the raw eggs had been scraped from the sidewalk, the last watermelon seed picked up, performance in all the events. In making the announce- ment, however, MC Howard Hall commented that with Richard the chairman of Western Weekend, and his wife the official scorekeeper for the Superstar contest, it really wasn't much of a surprise, For those who were keep- ing score, Don Crosier fin- ished in a dead heat for last. For Don, it was all downhill after the first event, water- melon spittin' which he won without any trouble. For the record, those who finished somewhere in bet- ween (but not necessarily in this order), included Mayor Lawrence Malcolm, council- lors Neil McLaughlin (who 'catches softballs in left field better than he catchés an egg), Jerry Taylor (who never really got untracked in any of the events but vowed he'll .be back next year), and Cy Rahm from the Works Department (who was probably asking himself why he ever got. involved with those crazy politicians in the first place). Oh, yes. For anybody who happens to be a trivia fanatic, tuck this little gem of knowledge away, and sur- prise your friends some New Years Eve: on three at- tempts, Don Crosier spit a watermelon seed a grand total of 854 inches.
