Love Is - a warm puppy; ~ Fun Is - a Mutt Show, for dogs and kids of all ages. The Port Perry Kinette's under the chairmanship of Viv Canning organized a most successful and enter- taining mutt show as part of the Western Weekend fes- tivities. Because of the heavy downpour Saturday morn- ing, the old ball diamond was too muddy so the ladies gathered their equipment and set it up on Queen Street. Chocolate bars were given to all the children who entered and lollipops and balloons were given out too. Cool drinks were thought- fully provided and appreci- ated because the afternoon weather was sunny and hot. But the dogs had their day and proved to be most agreeable despite the heat. As Kinette Doreen Kendall explained fo the children, "All your dogs are winners, kids, they are just great!" . Ribbons were awarded to winners in the ten classes and trophies were presented to the winners of the Best of Show. Top dogs were: 1st, Brandy, a small, white French Poodle, owned by Ronnie Vokins; 2nd, Homer, a sad-eyed, long eared Basset-hound, owned by Garth Kuyt; and 3rd, Obie, an English Sheep-dog owned by Kelly Gouin. To start off the event, the "best dressed' dogs strutt- ed their stuff. With two assistants, a very patient late-comer had a little diffi- culty walking upright with its long hoop skirted dress, but the pointed party hat perched atop this pooch was pure class. The judges employed a measuring tape to deter- "longest tail" and 'longest ears". Did someone say "Kelly" shown -by the youngest competitor Tiffany Whalen, came first in the longest tail contest by a "hair"? Suspense mounted as the young owners coaxed their pets to perform tricks, and of course some were a little distracted by such a large audience. One dog caught a frisbie in mid-air with no trouble, and then there was the sitting-pretty poodle with the pink toenails. The hardest category to judge must have been "the friendliest dog' because there were so many entries and wagging tails. It's hard to say who had the most fun, the people or the dogs. Next year there may be one small additional job for a volunteer. The job classifi- cation is '"'Stoop and Scoop'! Following are the names of the owners of the dogs who won ribbons. Best Dressed: 1.
