) 4 2 t a " L * 8 ¢ Durham-York MPP Bill Newman said in a written statement last week he would welcome a petition from Port Perry and area residents concerning water quality of the Nonquon River. Mr. Newman added, how- ever, that local charges that the Port Perry 'sewage lagoon system was respons- ible for the pollution are unfounded becquse the system operates on a season- al retention system and Dur- ham region authorities report there has been no - discharge- since the end of May. Mr. Newman cautioned that the water samples submitted by local residents earlier this summer which showed high coliform and fecal bacteria counts were tested by the Health Unit for drinking water standards only. Six recent tests on the Nonquon by the Ministry of the Environment for stream analysis indicated that ex- cept for one station, the pollution levels of the Non- quon fell within acceptable standards. The statement from Mr. Newman's office concluded Donate millions It was announced on the occasion of the Association of Kinsmen Clubs' Annual Convention that the Associa- tion provided $43,679,413.69 through their 563 Kinsmen Clubs from coast to coast. Mr. Wayne Boddy, Nation- al President of the Associa- tion, stated: "At an average of over $69,000. per club, this~ is the highest our Association has ever raised in a twelve month period. In fact, I believe this is an all time record for any service club in the history of our coun- try". " Nonquon petition by saying that the Ministry of the Environment is work- ing closely with Durham Region in a "continuing pro- gram of expansion of Port Perry sewage facilities to meet additional local - de- velopment." ' The petition referred to in Mr. Newman's statements is one started by Gordon Bur-. net of Seagrave earlier this summer. Mr. Burnet collect- ed about 100 signatures on July 20, and at that time indicated he would be for- warding the names to Mr. Newman's office in Toronto. Mr. Burnet decided to take this "action after receiving: water analysis from the Ministry of Health on samp- les he took from two differ- ent areas of the Nonquon, one upstream from the sew- age lagoons, and the other downstream about ohe- quarter mile from Seagrave. The downstream sample, taken June 2 indicated more than 80 counts per 100 milli- litres water of both coliform and fecal bacteria. 'The upstream sample, taken June 9 indicated a coliform count of 14 per 100 ml. water, and a fecal count of 2 per 100 ml. In both instances the Ministry of Health indicated the water would be unsafe for drinking. Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health state that ~ readings of plus 80 'indicate a recent heavy pollution of a sewage orgin," and calls this "potentially dangerous pollution." The lagoon system is dis- .charged into the Nonquon stream twice yearly with the contrgl valves left open for up to two weeks. The first discharge ended May 31, and a spokesman for Durham region, which operates the system, says the next dis- charge will be some time in November, as close to freeze up as possible.
