14-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1978 Sports Flamingos score 25 goals Port Perry Flamingos edged into a second place tie in the league standings as they completely throttled Lindsay Muskies 14-1 in Junior C action at Scugog Arena Sunday night. The win, before 250 fans, gives the team 32 points, the same number as Stouffville, and leaves both teams 12 points behind first place Bowmanville. The Muskies Sunday night played like fish out of water as Flamingos domi- nated from the opening face-off. Brad Nicholson opened the scoring at the 3:23 mark of the first period with a power play goal, and Flamingos built up a four goal lead before Lindsay got on the board late in the third period when Gary Beukeboom scored on the only shot that was to beat Port Perry goalie Charlie Durward. With a little more than four minutes left in the first period Rob Greiner scored the prettiest goal of the evening as he capped a three-way passing play with linemates Trent Mood and Keith Holten. Lindsay was being called for a delayed penalty on the play and Port Perry was able to use the extra attacker after pulling goalie Durward. Flamingos added two goals in the, second period, and then completed the rout with eight unanswered markers in the final 20 minutes. In the final period Wintario Tickets available at the Port Perry Star 985-7383 Flamingos had 29 shots on net while the Muskies could only direct four shots at Durward. On the game, Port Perry .out-shot the Muskies 53-19, which gives a pretty good indication of how much territorial ad- vantage Flamingos enjoyed. Phil Cochrane continues to provide Flamingos with scoring punch as he picked up six points on five assists and one goal. Keith Holten had a hat trick and two assists for a five point even- ing, and Trent Mood, who is playing improved hockey with almost every game, had two goals and two assists. Rob Greiner picked up four points on a goal and three assists, and Bill Bridge had two goals and one assist. Other Port Perry marksmen who found the target were Len Thorn- bury, Bill Owen, Sandy Cameron and Dave 'Nichol son, . 'Make two big wins look easy efforts Flamingos played one of their strongest all-round games of the season. Com- ing off an 11-6 win over Uxbridge on January 3, the Port Perry team earned the win over Lindsay with crisp passing, hard hitting and persistent fore-checking which kept the Muskies off balance in their own end and forced them to cough up the puck. Playing with- out Mike Adams who has ligament problems in his right leg as the result of a snowmobile accident, Flam- ingos defense rah the Muskies from mounting any kind of a sustained offense. It was a rough game, and with both teams hitting hard and laying on the lumber, it threatened - 10 break out into a major brawl on a couple of occass- ions. Doug Potts opened the scoring at 3:23 in the first period assisted by Brian Mikkelson and John Bloomfield. In the second Pat John- son gave Brian Dickson a perfect pass who in turn made a perfect move on the goaltender " to make the 'score 2-0. At 1:23 in the second period, Todd Wilbur scored on a low backhand drive on a pass from Alan Jones and Doug Potts. Oshawa scored a goal in the 3rd period but could not come back. Port won 3-1. On Jan. 7 Port travelled to Campbelford to partici- pate in a tournament. In the first game Port was up against Oshawa and . downed them 3-1. The rookie, Donnie Young scor- ed two and Bob Horton had one. In the second game Port was up against a tough Bramalea team and lost 7-0. Next game Wed. Jan. 11 against Oshawa. The teams. were evenly matched in the first period playing hard with god clean: checking. Due to Port Perry's great team effort they only allowed Oshawa to score once. Oshawa opened 'scoring.- again in the second period, but the Stone's did not give up. Oshawa scored again, but Port Perry winning the face off after Oshawa's goal came 'right back 15. seconds later with Desautels scoring from Ferguson. Port Perry retaliated with Kevin Fowler shooting the puck from the corner back to the point to Howard Lee, Lee got a shot away and Greg Williams completed Lee's shot by tipping it in the corner at 8:01. Port Perry wound up the scoring for this game at the 4:23 mark when' Ian Dickson and Kevin Fergu- son got a two on one break. Because Dickson passed to Ferguson they out smarted the Oshawa goal tender leaving an open corner for Ferguson to send the puck home. The game ended in a 5-4 win for Oshawa. ~ Uxbridge visited Port Perry on Friday, Jan. 6 taking a victory of 4:2 home with them, The game started with both teams close checking each other and each team taking a goal apiece. The second period wad a different story.
