Coupled with an 11-7 victory last Thursday night in Stouffville, Flamingos wound up with 48 points, .anda tie for second place in the standings with Stouff- ville. The team will end up in third, however, as Stouff- ville has a better won-loss record against Flamingos. ° Port Perry opens the first round of the playoffs this Thursday night in Port Hope in a best of five series. And although Port Hope fin- ished the regular season in' sixth place, the series is expected to be a good one as both teams played well in the latter stages of season. , Since the All-Star break December 26, Flamingos have lost just two games; one to Bowmanville and one to Port Hope a week ago Sunday. And Port Hope showed they may be tough in the playoffs, as they" recently fought first-place Bowmanville to a.6-6 draw. Sunday night against the Cougers, Doug Christie led Flamingos with three goals and an assist, while his line mate Phil Cochrane had a goal and three assists. Christie opened the scor- ing at the 49 second mark on a set-up in front of the net from Cochrane and Trent Mood. Cobourg got that one back six minutes later on a power play goal by Ken Stevenson who was left uncovered in front of Flamingo goalie Charlie Durward. . Trent Mood made it 2-1 for Port Perry just before the ten minute mark of the SYR: «PA HERI first on a set-up from Phil Cochrane and Bill Owen, and then two quick markers by Brad Nicholson and Phil Cochrane put the game out of reach. Both goals came after ~ good individual efforts, and both were low shots to the goalie's glove side. The Cougers struggled back to within one goal late in the second period, before Keith Holten scored in the final minute to give Flam- ingos a two goal bulge after 40 minutes of play. In the third, Doug Christie scored twice, the first on a blazing shot from the slot at the 6:49 mark, and the second at 9:33 on a clear breakaway. "defenseman Mike Adams slap shot from 15 feet that was in the net before the Cobourg goalie could move. The game was a rugged one, especially in the second period, when both teams did . some heavy hitting along the boards and in the corners. And the rough play proved expensive for Port Perry. Trent Mood will miss at least two games with a shoulder and rib injury after being cross- checked by Cobourg captain 'Morris Petherick as the buzzer sounded at the end of the second period. Pethe- rick picked up a minor pen- And will be lost for the next two games as he was called for hair pulling during a scrap midway in the second period with Ross McCullum. Both players got minors and fighting majors, and Adams was thrown from the game and assessed an extra five- minute penalty. Charlie Durward and Kevin Beer split the goal- tending chores for Flamin- gos and Beer looked espec- jally sharp in the second half of the game. While open playoffs against Port Hope Port Perry has a potent scoring attack, the key to success in the playoffs may very well rest on the two goaltenders, and the amount of protection they get from the forwards and defense. In Stouffville last Thurs- day night, Flamingos scored seven times in the first period en route to an 11-7 win over the Clippers. Phil Cochrane had three goals and two assists, while Doug Christie chipped in with two goals. Single markers were counted by Bill Bridge, Dave Nichol- son, Trent Mood, Bill Owen, Sandy Cameron and Brad Nicholson. Perry Brown had four points for the Clippers. , After the opening play-off game this Thursday night in Port Hope, Flamingos will be on home ice for the second and third games next Sunday and Tuesday even- ings. A fourth game, if necessary, will be back in Port Hope February 23, and if the series goes five games the final will be in Port Perry on Sunday, February _ 26th. ' SAAT EIN HIRT IR
