It cost Community Care $72.00 per senior client to help keep over 300 seniors happy in their own homes for that same period. Community Care volun- teers in those three centres logged 15,432 miles trans- porting elderly clients pri- marily to medical appoint- ments and took on 1,372 separate assignments from friendly visiting to -home repair. Over 7,000 hours of service were provided by staff, volunteers and board members from August 1st, 1977 to December 31st, 1977. According to the co- ordinator much of the success of the project is based on the fact that volun- teers are partially reimbur- sed for out of expenses by the elderly clients directly. During the 5 month period volunteers were reimbursed to the tune of $2,472,20. When senior clients can't afford to pay, Community Care compen- sates the volunteer from a subsidy fund. From August to December only $40.50 of 'the subsidy fund was re- quired. 'Seniors want to pay', said Mr. Johnston, "It's a matter of pride and it reinforces their sense of independence'. With the addition of offices in Whitby, Oshawa and Scugog, Mr. Johnston predicts that Community Care will be assisting over 500 seniors in the Region by this summer.
