It was nice to see that the merchants of the street realize that there is a need to "spruce-up" if they plan to compete with the large shopping centres. Being a frequent shopper in Port Perry, I look for-. ward with anticipation to REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM NOTICE OF WATER AND SEWER RATE ADJUSTMENT The Region wishes to advice all water and sewer customers that as of January 1, 1978, Phase 111 of the five year phasing-in program of the Uniform Rates becomes effective. These rates will be in effect from January 1, 1978+ to December 31, 1978, a copy of which will be included with your first billing for 1978. ~N for downtown seeing the first step of this ambitious undertaking take place. After talking with a num- ber of the local merchants along Queen Street, I find that the one thing of most concern to the businessmen is the possible loss of angle parking. As far as I am concerned "get rid of it". For me it is much easier to park behind Brock's store and walk to the front street, and if they follow through with plans to make the parking at the rear of the stores even more access- ible, it will even be better. Congratulations to the businessmen who have taken the initiative to get this much needed project' underway. Yours truly, G. L. O'Connor P.S. Reading the Oshawa Times on Saturday, they must think Port Perry's business section is about to die. They say, "Merchants have voted overwhelmingly to implement a plan to breathe new life into Port Perry's stagnating down- town business area". The request to start the wheels in motion towards establishing such a by-law was made by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, and _resulted from a general meeting of the Chamber February 1 in which the principle of a BIA for Port Perry: got a strong support from merchants and members - of the business community. The notice of intent on the part of Scugog Township will be mailed out to all persons within the designated area who receive a business assessment. The designated area is bordered by Lilla, Mary, * North and Water Streets, and includes the Queen - Street commercial core. Howard Hall, Cliff Crowell: and Bill Lock represented the Chamber of Commerce at the council meeting Mon- day afternoon and during the discussion it was pointed out that those persons within the designated area who object to the formation of the BIA must state their objections in a written petition to the Township not later than 60 days after the notices of intent have been mailed out. To scuttle the plans for the BIA, the objectors must make up more than one-third of the total businesses within the designated area, and they must at the same time represent more than one- third of the total business assessment within the same Manchester News By Ruby Fielding Church Sunday, February 19 at 11:15 a.m. Rev.
