"Oldtimers' to compete in Florida tournament Call any of these guys "Oldtimers' on the street and you'll probably end up with a black eye, but the story is different once they pull Black Hawk sweaters over their heads, lace up their skates and take to the ice. John Lajoie, left, Gary Geer, Jerry Luke, Garnet Warriner and Jim Burnett, all from the Port Perry area, were members of the Ontario Champion Uxbridge Black Hawk Intermediate team from the early 1960's. (Bob Bradbury and Bill Cornish are also members of the team but were not present.) Now, some 15 years later they have suited-up along with other members of the old team to try and get rid of bulging midrifts, aching muscles and at the same . time renew some friendships through the game. According to Jack Ballinger, coach, the guys get along very well together and have once again become a very competitive team, although the original idea was just to get together and have some fun. Since reorganizing last year the team has been finalists in a number of tournaments and won the (F-Division) Canada-U.S.A. hockey tournament held in Niagara Falls. This season they have played the CFTO Bassett Hounds twice, to help raise money for the new Uxbridge arena, and numerous games with both oldtimers and younger teams. On top of this they practice every Thursday Over the weekend they competed in a 3<day tournament in Burlington, where last' year they were finalists. But the best is yet to come. } On April 14, the whole team and their wives leave for a 9-day Oldtimers Hockey Tournament in Tampa Florida. Coach Ballinger told the Star that the team figured this would be a great way to finish off the season and have a little holiday Being a member of this Oldtimers team is not exactly cheap. Each member of transportation and expenses for the tournaments. The only additional revenue they have is raised through team dances and hockey games. With the spirit the Black Hawks show, both on the ice and in the dressing room, they should make a good showing in Tampa and we're sure they will. Go get 'em boys.....and have a good time.
