Speaking recently at a meeting in Stouffville, of the World Development Com- mittee of Churches, Mr. Benson said, 'the beef industry has been asking the Federal government to implement a Beef Import Law for the last three years, but to no avail. "Recent studies indicate that Canadian beef pro- ducers have lost over 400: million in equity from their farms. during the last four years. During that same period, huge quantities of cheap imported product were allowed to enter Can- ada and further undermine our market--at a time when Canadian producers are already being driven against the financial wall. "Beef prices must now be allowed to rise so that beef farmers may recoup the losses of these last four years and continue in busi- ness," he added. "This country's protection of its own beef industry is the worst in the world. Why should we continue to let that happen? We need just as much protection as do the beef producers of other nations--and they already have it, in many cases at our expense."
