Busy PPHS year coming to an end By Kathy Ryan & Patricia Peek The school year is almost over, and the only unhappy people are the students who have to write exams, and the teachers who have to mark them. But just because the school year is almost over, don't stop giving all your school spirit. Thursday was _ sucker day, and almost everyone took advantage of it! On Tuesday, May 16, at: Win stock market trophy Two grade 11 students from Port Perry High recently made a killing of sorts on the stock market, and in the process, captured the regional competition in a Stock Market Game play- - ed in conjunction with Wil- fred Laurier University. Dan Twomey and Jim . Treen turned a mythical $100,000 into $168,461, and the students won a trophy and $50 for their efforts. \ Winners at the provincial and regional level from across Ontario were honoured May 17 at an awards luncheon in Toronto where guest speaker was Huntley McKay, vice pres- ident of market develop- ment and research for the Toronto Stock Exchange. The Stock Market con- tests started at Wilfred Laurier University eight years ago and this year more than 6,000 students from 140 high schools took part. Starting off with a mythi- cal $100,000 the object of the game is to increase that amount over a 12-week per- iod through buying and sell- The Univer- sity's computer keeps track of all transactions, and even deducts the broker's com- missions. The professor in charge describes the game as a real learning and practical experience. Originally the game was designed for stu- dents in the University's business and economics ~ "school, but after two high school students participated on a trial basis, the interest grew to the point where two complete sessions are now required-each year. The two team members from Port Perry are stu- dents of commercial teacher W. G. Sharpe. Congratualations, boys. Now maybe you'd be inter- ested in a little part-time consulting work. 11:45, 63 dedicated students mounted their bicycles, and proceeded to wheel their way around the 18-mile route, up Simcoe Street to the 14th concession, across the 14th concession and down to Seagrave, through Seagrave down to the highway (Lilla St.) to Macdonald St., here in town, back up to. the school. Special congratu- lations are in store for the top 10 girls: Paula Price, Kathy Mahaffy, Karin Mc- Quinn, Lynn O'Reilly, Kelly Fairman, Vicky Fairman, Anne-Marie Taylor, Kim Evans, Leslie Forder, All- ison McNab. Top 10 boys: Mike Kennedy, Scott Sin- clair, Robert Cook, Bob Horn, Kevin Haugen, Kevin Crews, Ken Lenney, Mike Doupe, Cam Muir and John Fulford. It was an excellent showing! Altogether, the students brought in a total of $315 which will be don- ated to the Big Brothers Association. The Track team placed well in the recent track meet, and will continue to represent Port High at the next meet. On Monday, May 15, John Espley, Paul Martens, Ron Linton, Cathy Carr, and Mark Wallace went to the Royal York Hotel in Toronto to compete in the Ontario version of the Business Game. They were on Chan- nel 5 television (C.B.C.) at 6:00. A great showing for they placed 5th out of 1100 On Wednesday, Dan Tuomay and Jim Treen went to the Hotel Toronto sponsored by the University of Waterloo Stock Market Game (see press release). They each received a plaque, and $50 between APPOINTMENT Gordon G. Mark of Little Britain has been appointed 'assistant superintendent of entries for the Royal Agri- cultural Winter Fair. The announcement was made last week by general man- ager John E. The results are not in but we have great con- fidence in these girls. The results are in from the Durham: Region Type- writing and Production contest. Competing in the contest were Dawn Real, June Bent and Kathy Ryan (Sr.), Wanetta Vader and Kathleen Donnelly (Inter- mediate), Jenifer Spears and Bev Moulder (Jr.). Now that Amnesty Week at the School - library is over, there isn't any reason for anybody to have extra library books in their lecker.....or at home. On Monday, May 22 our school was represented in the Bed Race by Keith Barr, Bob Ireland, Paul Griffen, Kathy Smith and Eric Smith. Last week 63 students from Port Perry High School rode an 18-mile bike course from Port Perry to Seagrave and back, and in the process raised $315. for the Scugog Big Brother [left] Kathy .
