'Scugog farmers getting desperate for rain One of the longest dry spells in memory is starting to create serious problems for farmers all across south- ern Ontario. And unless there is a sub- stantial rainfall in the very near. future the situation could become critical. A spokesman for the pro- vincial agriculture depart- "ment in Uxbridge told the' Star Monday that the lack of ' moisture is starting to hurt corn- and. grain crops in Durham Region, and the re- sult could be lower yields. Agriculture rep John Fin- lay added that the chances for a second cutting of hay are almost lost this summer. The impact of that will be softened somewhat for far- mers as the quality of the hay in this year's first cut- - {ing has generally been ex- + gpellent. ~ Unless there is a rainfall in 'the very near future, .far- mers in the area could find themselves running short of feed before next year's crops are harvested. because the .dry weather is having a severe affect on pasture lands, some farmers are already starting to feed their cattle' with hay which nor- mally would have been used SNCS EN CRP N, Ve TURD DT Pie PAR RAS +? wh SE Th Vo Sih SAL Sr gi 3) a I Fr.» wr rr J AA TA A™ car aT IE A SF a' for feed later this winter. If feed supplies start to run short over the winter, fms" mers are faced with the prospect of either culling out their herds, or feeding them less, and both situations mean less milk production. While It is not likely that this will mean an increase in the price of milk to con- sumers because of govern- ment price supporting, there is a real likelihood that the price of milk products such as cheese and could go up. Baled hay is presently selling for about 65 cents a bale, and one Scugog farmer that this could very well climb to more than $1 per bale. Fortunately, the heavy fall rains last year and winter snowfall have raised the water tables, but there are a couple of '"critical" areas in Uxbridge Township, and far- mers all over the Region are certainly - not wasting any water at this time. While there have been isolated showers in Durham Region, Scugog Island dairy farmer Cliff Redman told the Star that the last heavy rainfall to hit his farm was about May 20, almost eight weeks ago. i Mr. Redman has about 50 acres of corn planted, and some dry patches on high land are starting to show the affects ofthe dry weather. On Monday of this week, he pointed out leaves that are starting to wilt, and said this means the plants are simply not getting enough moisture. The lack of rainfall has also had another afféct on ' -.the corn crop. Weed spray- 4 ing for foxtail should be followed by a rainfall within seven days to have maxi- mum impact. The rainfall didn't come after the spraying, and an - attempt was made to kill the weeds by plowing or '"scuff- ling" between the rows of corn. - Mr. Redman told the Star Monday that while he is concerned about the lack of rainfall, most of his corn crop at the moment is in good condition and yields should be high, if "we don't go too much longer without a good rain." Agriculture rep John Fin- -lay said that a "good rain" * for.the farmers is more than . just an isolated shower. He agreed with the .Ontario Federation of Agriculture president who said 'last ~ week-end that most farmers in southern Ontario could use one inch of rain every week for the next four weeks. ~ A change in.the weather is forecast for later this week, and while boaters, fishermen and cottagers may not like it too much, area farmers will welcome it, gladly.
