Most people begin to feel a little uncomfortable when hot temperatures combine With high humidity, but for those with general ® good health the discomfort is usually only temporary and doesn't result in any serious health problems. It's not the same for other, however, such as the elderly, the obese, or those with chronic deviliiatimg dis- orders. These people are most susceptible to heat problems when the mercury climbs above 30 degrees celcius. The St. John Ambulance warns that there are three disorders than can occur because of high tempera- "tures, and outlines some of the symptoms to watch for and the treatment if such disorders should occur. HEAT STROKE The most serious is heat stroke. While it is rare, it can present a real medical emergency. The symptoms are a sudden loss of consciousness, high fever, cessation of per- spiration and collapse. This 'is brought on when the heat. regulating mechanisms of the body cease to function. Prior warning signs of heat stroke may include headache, nausea, dizziness, visual disturbance and convulsions. If a person is hit by heat stroke, proper medical heat stroke, proper medical attention should be sought out of the sun, and fanned or sprinkled with cool water. The extremities should be massaged to maintain circu- lation, and the airway should be checked to make sure it remains open. The - viétim Victims of heat stroke should be careful about re- exposure to the sun and high temperatures, as they may remain hyper-sensitive for a considerable length of time. HEAT EXHAUSTION Caused by lack of peri- pheral circulation and salt depletion and dehydration, the symptoms may be weak- ness, headaches, dizziness, and muscle cramps. The skin pales and there is pro- fuse perspiration. Other symptoms may include an increased heart rate, mental confusion and lack of muscle co-ordination. ) The treatment is to put the victim in a cogl place, ele- vate the feet" and massage the legs. A physician should be consulted on the proper way to Yeplace salt in the body. HEAT CRAMPS Caused mainly by salt depletion, heat cramps are painful spasms of the invol- untary muscles in the sto- mach and extremities. The skin is moist and cool, and muscle twitching may be evident. Body temperature may rise slightly. The treatment again is to get the victim out of the direct sun, massage muscles gently, rest, and medical attention for salt replace- ment. While the elderly, the over- weight and the chronically ill may be much more suscept- ible to these conditions, there are a few steps that everyone can take to help prevent heat disorders. 'Avoid unnecessary ex- posure to extreme heat; maintain an adequate fluid and salt intake, slow down physical activity, wear light- coloured and loose fitting clothing, avoid over-indulg- ing with alcoholic beverages, get plenty of rest, and main- tain good nutrition.
