Since then the original run of 2,000 calendars has been sold and they are into their second printing. Laurel Campbell-Stark, a relative newcomer to the Yarea, graduated in 1973 from the Ontario College of Art and then spent three years teaching art in a Quebec high school. She then spent some time in Ottawa before mov- ing with her husband into Harmony Hollow, a heme built by her husband's ances- @torin 1839. The Stark's home ® is just one of the 12 buildings J » w featured in the calendar. It was shortly after they moved into the historical home that her interest in old buildings cultivated. 'I've always been interested in historical buildings so it was therefore a natural inclina- tion to draw them', she says. - She felt that the best way to bring these buildings to the attention of the residents of the region was to compile a collection of drawings in a calendar. The final product of her six-month project was recently released and has proved to be an instant success. The 1979 calendar, subtitled . "Living In His- tory" is now on sale at many gift and book shops through- out the region and more close to home at Lukes Country Store, Port Perry. The buildings reproduced in ink sketches are ones still in existance, as Campbell Stark felt that it would be better to enhance what we still have, not what we have lost to time. The buildings included in the book are Toad Hall, Whitby; Brooklin Church; Skelding Homestead, Orono; Parkwood, Oshawa; Kirby School, Kirby; Martinscroft, north of Oshawa; Harmony Hollow, Columbus; Quaker Meeting House; Uxbridge; Bigelow House, Port Perry; Vanstone Mill, Bowman- ville; Columbus Church; and the Newton Home in Ennis- killen. One: of the main reasons for the project, according to Campbell-Stark, was that there aren't many things on the market today which pertain to our immediate environment. The images produced are very close and familiar to the residents of the region and she can forsee doing the calendars for a number of years.
