On Friday night they met Beaverton at the new Scugog Arena. Both teams came out real strong and at 14:34 of the first period Jeff John- stone scored Ports first goal. Beaverton wasn't about to let the home team away téo lightly and they came right back at 13:33 of the first period to score making it a one all tie. Scoring for Beaverton was Paul Fisher assisted by Sean Foreman, and Mike Brown. This made the Legionaires work a little harder and results came at 8:19 of the first period with a goal scored by Jeff John- stone assisted by Kevin Ferguson. At7:19 of the first period the Legionaires added another goal scored by Vaughan McKee unassisted. But this didn't seem to be good enough as Chris -La- rocca assisted by Darron Desautels, and Howard Lee scored yet another goal at 3:21. This ended the first period with the score stan- ding at 4 to 1 in favour of the Legionaires. The second period saw Beaverton a little off guard and the Legion- aires were successful in scoring at the 1:11 mark. This goal was scored by Jeff Johnstone assisted by David Kemp. The third period saw the Legionaires score two more goals to end the game seven to one in their favour. Scoring in the third was Darron Desautels and Ray Meisner both unassisted. Lets not write the Beaverton boys off as an easy team to beat. These boys played very well and the Legion- aires really had to skate hard to win the/game. Better luck next time Beaverton. Sunday afternoon saw the Legionaires against the old rivals Uxbridge in Uxbridge. This game was the most important game the Legion- aires would play. If you can remember back as far as October 13th Uxbridge met the Legionaires on home ice and defeated them 5 to 4 but due to lack of ice time the game was called with 5:22 remaining in the third period. Well the Legionaires went out and played a very tough game and managed to tie Uxbridge 2 - 2. The first period saw the Legionaires leading 2 to 0 with goals scored by Steven Lee and Vaughan McKee both unassisted. Uxbridge was in there fighting all the way and was able to score two goals as well to end the first period in a 2 to 2 tie. This was to be the only scoring during the entire game. Scoring for Uxbridge was Daryl Davis and Kevin Smith both unassisted. In the third period the climax had to be at the 2:43 mark when Howard Lee of the Legionaires thought he had Senior Redmen drop exciting game Whip Stouffville 91-27 by Danny Millar The Senior Redmen from Port Perry 'High School lost their most exciting game of the pre-season to the Fight- ing Irish of Notre Dame in Welland on Friday, Decem- ber 8th. For three and a half quar- ters the contest was an absolute thriller. Play was « close and fast right up until two minutes into the final quarter. Then the momen- tum seemed to shift to the Irish and they took full advantage of it. They forced Port Perry miscues and turned them into points. Also during this time, Mike Patton and Scott Wilbur - fouled out, which didn't help the Redmen offense any. Up until he was disqualified Patton was playing what coach Dekker called 'his finest game of the season, to date," He was leading the team in points (27), rebounds (12) and assists with six. Gord Simmonds had twelve points and five steals. The game also marked the return of big George Cope who played in brief stretches of time. Dekker was satis- fied with Cope's perfor- mance as he stated "I was handling. SUN and SAN are REAT BUT...... we ALSO give you: e carefree travel by luxurious motor- coach with new sights to see daily * personal attention from our profes- sional drivers and escorts * worry free accommodation in first class Hotels & Motels | e freedom from the cares of luggage REMEMBER... there's plenty to see between the cold north and the sunny south Travel by motorcoach with TRENTWAY FOR AN OUTLINE OF TOURS TO FLORIDA, TEXAS, CALIFORNIA, CALL TODAY: NONQUON TRAVEL 985-2336 pleased with his stamina and momentum on the floor but his timing is way off". The coach added that Cope's positive attitude will help get his timing back. Coach Dekker was ab- solutely distraught over the loss. "They didn't beat us, we beat ourselves. We just didn't play our aggressive style of play", he said adding "we just didn't take the ball to the basket when the oppor- tunity presented itself. We missed the key chances. Dekker also felt that the team needed a game similar to this one, in which they were pressured all game long. "They illustrated some of our weaknesses. We sure know what to work on now', he stated. Some of the things the Redmen will be working scored the winning goal but much to everyone's disap- pointment the officials said no goal. Oh well Howard it was a good try and better luck next time. Congratula- tions to our very hard work- ing and dedicated Legion- aires. This now puts them at first place in their league. With this impressive record the Legionaires travel to Sunderland on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. and then Friday night sees them at home to meet Cannington. on now are: defensive posi- tioning, passing under pressure and getting shots off more quickly. One aspect of the game that pleased the coach was the foul shooting in which Port Perry was 21 for 25. Mike Patton hit on ten of eleven free throws. Earlier in the week the Redmen whipped the Stouff- ville Spartans 91-27. it was the second lopsided win for Port Perry seniors over the inept Spartans. Dennis Franssen had the most Port Perry steals with six, Simmonds and Patton had six assists each to lead the "team. Simmonds was tops in scoring with twenty-two points followed by Patton and Scott Wilbur with twenty points apiece.
