Novice All-Stars tournament champions On Saturday, December 30, 1978 the Mersco Novice All-Stars travelled to their first tournament of the season at Keene and came home the champs. The first game for Port was against Lakefield with Port the victors with a score of 4-0. John Lally was the lucky boy with a hat trick and Ron Crawford with the last goal. Helping these goals were Robbie Brown, Mike Sorely and Brad Traves. The coaches feel that the second game of the tour- nament against Lindsay, the favourites, was the hardest and the boys on our defence helped our goalie to play one of his best games between the pipes. The combination of wingers in the corners, great positional hockey and passing to the centre man were what Port had to come out the winners of this game 5-1. Goal scorers were John Lally 2, Brad Menzies 2, Scott Feasby 1. Port was down 2-0 going into the second period and tied it up with two seconds on the clock in the period. One of the highlights of this game was the penalty shot taken on our goalie Stacey Ballingal which was the deciding factor in him being selected Most Valu- able Goalie of the Tour- nament. A tired, but elated, group of boys fired home two more goals to come out the victors 4-2. The coaches are sure with- out the all out effort of Jamie Menzies, Steven Connors, Mark Barkey, Brad Traves, Warren Geer, Robbie Jamie- son, the team would not have been able to do what they did. Look to the future for this gang of little men to put Port on the map. This brings the team to 15 wins, 7 losses and one tie.
