My son was sent home one morning because he was short three duo-tangs. We buy all his paper, lined and plain, pencils, crayons, pens, rubbers, math sets, locks for his locker, etc. In shop we supplied wire socket and pull chain for, a clamp he just finished. There is just not enough - money for the School to supply these things. I have heard that some teachers have spent money from their own pockets to supply some things that are needed. Don't you agree that our teachers are more important than these Councillors who haggle for hours about nothing. Our children are our future leaders and they are going to have quite a job untangling the mess our country is in now. With all these cut-backs how do these people have the gall to vote themselves raises? Why don't they cut back on their wages and put the money where it is need- ed? Councillor John Wolters and the Oshawa & District Labour Council are worried that the morals of the adults living in Durham Region are being sullied. I would just like to say, that although I do not necessarily approve of these establishments, no one is forced to go into topless bars. Adults eat and drink where they like. Where is the strong voice of the Labour Council and also the School Boards, regarding the fact that our children could be taught by homosexuals who have been arrested by the law for - breaking the same? In Toronto, as we have all read in the daily papers, school board trustees, Children's Aid Society workers and some professors are homo- sexuals. What are our leaders going to do about this? Adults can take care of themselves in most cases, but who protects our child- ren from these people? We seem to have our priorities all wrong in these matters. This marks the second occasion in recent meetings wherein grants for capital construction costs of hospitals have been made by the council. In December the council made a grant of $10,000.to the Port Perry Hospital. The annual meeting of the Port Perry, Reach and Scugog Agricultural Society was held in the Public Library, January 25th. The big job done on the fair grounds during the year was repairing the grandstand .and putting a new roof on it. This had cost a little over $1,500. The meeting of the Manchester, Myrtle and Prospect Young People was held in the Myrtle Church, January 18 with President Wesley Johnson in charge. It was decided that the Young People go to Toronto to hear Billy Graham on Sunday, January 23. 20 YEARS AGO Thursday, January 29, 1959 The first from Port Perry to be chosen as Page Boy was Doug Edenborough. Doug is an honour student at Port Perry Public School. Two old pictures which once hung in the fire hall have come to light again. Mr. Guy Raines, Fire Chief of the Port Perry Fire Brigade brought the old pictures into the Star Office. The pictures show the Darktown Fire Brigade in action. They are bright coloured and _ cartoon styled and were sent out by the Gutta Publish- ing and Rubber Manufacturing Co. in 1884. The pic- tures were sent out in much the same manner as calen- dars are sent out today. Port Perry's Council for 1959 were Reeve J.J. Gib- son, Art Cox, T.J. Harris, I.A. Boyd and Frank Godley. 10 YEARS AGO Thursday, January 30, 1969 Well over 100 Port Perry fans sat in Maple Leaf Gardens for more than 5 hours Monday evening. They were there to see Anna Forder and Richard Stephens win first place in the Canadian Semipn Pair Figure Skating Competition. After three years of successful soeration of Port Perry 1.G.A., the proprietor, Mr. Dan Madsen has pur- chased the business portion of Stouffville I.G.A. After the usual prelimi- naries, the Prize Committee consisting of Dorothy Naples and Marjorie Williams reported that the prizes for 1979 would consist of four categories: A- Hooked rug from cut woolen material. Ist prize $7.00, 2nd prize - $3.00; B - Hooked article, other than rug, from cut woolen material 1st prize $7.00, 2nd prize - $3.00; C- Beginner's rug hooked by a Beginner from cut woolen material 1st prize $7.00, 2nd prize $3.00; D-Beginner's wall hanging hooked by a Beginner from cut woolen material 1st prize $7.00, 2nd prize $3.00.
