Peter found the going a little rough [especially the early start] but atk Na STN $3 py SII 6 4, APE 0 eA RACS o'er, Nearly 300 hardy snow- mobilers braved the cold for 100 chilly miles Sunday morning, and crippled children came out the big, big winners. Port Perry .Snowarama co-ordinator John Davies says that more than $20,000 was raised through pledges, almost double the amount raised last year, and he was delighted with the results. "Fantastic," he said. "We are very pleased the way things went. Opening the Snowarama ride up for anyone this year sure made a difference." The riders started leaving the Latcham Centre on the Port Perry waterfront at 8:00 a.m. Sunday for the first leg of the 100 mile ride which took them on a wide ark around the north end of Scugog. The second leg went south through Cartwright Township into Manvers and then back to Port Perry via Nestleton. . The Port Perry Snow- arama for Crippled Children is part of similar rides across the province held each winter. Half of all the money collected through pledges goes directly to the Ontario Society for Crippled Children and the remainder is used by Easter Seal service clubs in Durham Region. The ride this year attrac- ted considerably more participants than last year when 168 took to the 100-mile course, and this was due to the fact that the event was open in 1979 to anybody with a snowmobile. The event this year attrac- ted a number of 'VIP's" including MPP George Ashe, Ajax mayor Clarke Mason and Uxbridge Mayor Gary Herrema who left the Latcham Centre at 10:00 am. and were led through the course by Harvey Graham of the Dynos snow- mobile club. The first group to get away in the morning included Bill Harper of Port Perry and Dr. Russ Martin who had collected more than $500 in pledges and was riding a ARE ri ih 300 snowmobilers raise a record $20,000 snowmobile donated for the event by Willy Houthuys. They finished the first 50 miles by 10:00 a.m. and after a half-hour break completed the full course by early afternoon. The rider with the most pledges this year was Fred Gallop, a member Of the RCMP detachment in Oshawa, and he collected $946. The 100-mile course was marked out and patrolled by members of eight snow- . mobile clubs in this area including Port Perry and the * Cartwright Dynos. About 15 members of the Scugog Lake G.R.S. club provided radio communications, and this group has already said it will take on the same duties next year. As might be expected there were a few break- downs over the 100-mile course, but Mr. Davies says there were no serious. problems and he added that Snowarama was an un- qualified success. The Snowarama events across Ontario began in 1975 and former wrestler -Whipper Watson (who was crippled himself in a car accident several years ago) has been closely associated with it. Since 1975 the events have raised close to $1 million. fon "This year's "Tammy" in the Durham area, nine year old Nada Batinic of Oshawa, paid a visit to the Latcham Centre on Sunday morning and greeted drivers as they completed the first leg of the ride. He's not sure, however, whether he'll go through it again next year.
