Scugog loses $113,660 to fires during 1977 Figures released by the Ontario Fire Marshall's office last week show that during 1977 there were 22 reportable fires in Scugog Township, causing total property loss of $113,660. There was no loss of life and no reportable injuries ~due to these fires during 1977. The Fire Marshall's report indicates that in neighbour- ing Uxbridge Township to the west there were 10 fires reported during 1977 causing property loss of $105,800, and no loss of life or injuries. In Brock Township during 1977, there were 21 fire incidents reported to the Fire Marshall's Office, causing property loss of $168,611, and no loss of life or injury. PROVINCE Across Ontario in 1977, the number of fires increased over the previous year from 23,109 to 24,610. The total loss in property also went up from $143.1 million to $156.6 million (not adjusted for inflation). Although the five year average for the number of fires from 1973-77 is 24,144, or slightly lower than the number of fires in 1977, the five year average total fire loss at $135 million is more than $20 million less than total loss through fires. in 1977. - "In 1977, the number of deaths due to fires in Ontario declined from the previous year from 265 to 238. The number of fire deaths in Ontario has declined every year since 1974 when a high of 281 was recorded. As might be expected, smoking and the kitchen stove were the two largest single causes of fire during 1977, with 1447 fires caused by a stove or range, and an additional 905 caused by unclassified cooking equip- ment. Cigarettes were the cause of 1437 fires while unclas- sified or unknown smokers materials were the cause of 2111 fires. And the report indicates 3627 reported automobile fires causing 19 injuries, four deaths and an estimated $2.9 million damage. This is the second time that such a detailed report has been issued by the Fire Marshall's office. The report says that while fire departments appear to be holding their own in the fight to reduce property loss and the number of deaths and injuries, '"'the increase in the fire incident rate reflects - an increasing need for inten- sity of application by municipal fire departments in pursuing their fire preven- tion programs during the year."
