Mr. Freeman, who is in the trucking business, created a bit of stir last Friday morning when he set out by truck across Lake Scugog towing a 30' by 50' steel garage. He bought the building, complete with oil furnace, from Philp Pontiac Motors in Port Perry, and plans to use it to store his trucks at his property on Scugog Island. But getting the building from point A to B was the hard part. Rather than making the tedious trip by road, which would have involved the costly. process of takikng down numerous hydro lines and fences, Mr. Freeman plowed a three mile ice road across Lake Scugog. Using a tractor truck and dolly, he inched the building across the ice. "I took a bit of a gamble," he said later. "And it paid off." He said he was about three hours on the ice, and estimates the combined weight of the truck, the dolly and the building at 45 tons. "I'heard the ice cracking a lot, but there was no prob- lem. I was worried a little about air pockets." He figures there was at least 30 inches of ice, and with the weight spread over 75 feet, it was obviously thich enough to support the load. The move across the ice was prompted strictly by economics, as Mr. Freeman estimates the venture saved him close to $10,000 in costs. The gamble, as he called it, paid off, and was worth it.
