Hes : David Fulford and Stephen Akkerman won silver and bronze medals respectively for their efforts. v - On February 17, 1979 14 skaters from P.P.F.S.C. participated in the Pine Ridge Interclub Competition hosted this year by Orono Bowmanville takes playoff spot from Junior Redmen by Danny Millar The Port Perry junior Redmen narrowly missed the final playoff spot in the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association elimi- nations when they lost their final game of the season to the Bowmanville Redmen on Tuesday, February 20th. They needed to win in order to finish eighth overall for the last playoff berth but fell 60-49 to the Redmen and ended up ninth. The big reason for the loss was the number of turnovers Port Perry gave away. They threw the ball away 16 times in the first half and 18 in the second. The contest started as an offensive battle with Port Perry guard Bob Ireland, the captain, leading the way. Ireland's inspired play was one of only a few bright spots by the team in a rather lacklustre effort. At the end of one quarter Port held a 16-10 lead. The tempo of the match quickened considerably in the second session as both teams seemed to disregard the defence and concentrate on putting the ball in the hoop. Port's game plan all season long has been stress- sing defence so the chances that they win a high scoring shootout are unlikely es- pecially when Port Perry Redmen's big gunner George Burnett is injured. Port Perry held a-slim 28-26 lead at half time thanks mainly to the fact that they were four-for-four on free throws. Late in the third quarter the tide rolled towards Bowmanville as they grabbed the lead in the final minute and took a three- quarter lead of 39-36. For a team that was scratching for a playoff spot and needed a big quarter to get it, the Port Perry juniors were surprisingly inept in the last eight minutes. After a fast start in which they regained the lead 42-41 they seemed to fall apart. They could not shoot accurately. When the shooting is off the rebounds are needed to get the ball back, but Port could not get those either. With 2:23 eft in his season Arend Dekker called a time out from the Port Perry bench. Whatever he said did not shake his players from their lethargy as they surrendered ten more points. Curt Pinkowski fouled out of the game with one minute remaining an the outcome no longer was in doubt. Port Perry finished a disappointing season with a 3-8 record in league play. Coming into the season, the outlook has been bright. The juniors were encouraged by a successful exhibition season which equaled the regular season in length. They competed in the Bengal tournament in Richmond Hill late in 1978 and after defeating Aurora in the first game they lost to a strong Jarvis team. One highlight was a pre- season victory over a senior team in Stouffville. It was in that game that Burnett scored the longest field goal of any Port team's season when an errant pass in- tended for Ireland three quarters of the down the court crashed off the board and into the basket instead. In the first scheduled game of the season Port Perry lost to the Hawks of Henry Street. And that's 'where the trouble started. Bob Ireland began having trouble with his knees, a chronic problem. He would eventually sit out one game after it was feared he would be gone for the season. Curt Pinkowski was ill before Christmas and was absent from the team for all but the final three games. When he returned his leg was heavily taped from an injury. The same game that marked Pinkowski's return saw George Burnett fall under the goal and sevérely sprain his ankle. He would be gone for the season. Since Burnett was the captain of the Redmen a replacement had to be named. A better choice could not have been made when Bob Ireland was selec- ted. In two games Ireland scored fifty points, including a season high of 36 for any Redman. However, the" injuries coupled with a thin bench ended Port Perry's chances of a championship.
