Seagrave news by Donna Wanamaker Monday, February 19th Unit II held their meeting at Marily Beacock"s, the girls in charge had a represen- tative from the hydro there who gave an enlightening talk on how we can conserve energy within our homes. On Sunday, Melody-Anne Somerville and Ann Winfield visited the birthday box. Happy Birthday to you both. There will be a choir practise on Thursday evening, new members are welcome. On Saturday evening, the Group Committee held a dance in aid of our Scouting programme and it was reported to have been a success. A big thank you to all who made this a success. There will be a paper drive on March 10th at 9:30 a.m. Please contact Vern Cavenough, Paul Saulnier and Ken Sturman re special pick-up. On March 11th, there will be a Church Parade at Greenbank. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Ventures and Green- bank Brownies will take part. Please have the children there by 11:15 a.m. On March 4th® the Seagrave Sunday School is holding a sleigh ride at the church, mothers are asked to bring a finger dessert. Hot dogs and hot chocolate will be supplied. This sleigh ride is possible, due to Earl and Joan Durward, a special EVI our insurance a love you ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE thank-you to this couple. Beavers are requested to please bring your hammers to the next 3 meetings. The Ladies Auxiliary are planning to hold a fun day on March 11th. There will also be a fashion show on April 10th. In welcoming the business- men and women to this first meeting at Port Perry High School, principal Doug Williams explained the reason behind the idea was to informally discuss the problems associated with 'classrooms in operation. Durham council likes three-year term Durham Region council last week voted in favour of municipal elections being held every three years. Mr. Williams said that he hoped that this would be only the first of a humber of future education-business meetings to be held by the school in the coming years. While at the school, the business community was brought up to date on the current high school pro- grams including the variety of courses available and what is required by a student to graduate. There was also a discussion period at which time members of a panel explained various aspects of the education and work experience needed by the students to obtain employ- ment. During a tour of the school facilities business people had a chance to see the procedure in the machine years, rather than the present two years. In voting to endorse the Peel Region resolution, the main arguments in favour seemed to be that the com- plexities of municipal government are so deman- ding these days that a new councillor barely has time to "learn the ropes" before another election rolls around. - ~ And Oshawa Mayor Jim Potticary said the move to a three-year term could save the tax-payers money. He mentioned that it cost the city of Oshawa $72,000 to hold the last municipal election. However, Brock Mayor Allan McPhail didn't agree with the "learning the ropes' argument stating that at the Regional level the public should have its say more often because of the very complexities.
