""TIifteen students from Carleton, Quebec, on the south shore of the Gaspe Peninsula, have been stay- ing at various home in the area for the past five days on the first half of an exchange program. Fifteen students from Cartwright High School will stay in Carleton for five days in May. Cartwright students held their Winter Carnival on Friday with the Heart Dance a delightful climax. Blackstock is sorry to hear the Mr. Walter Lawrence, Mrs. Percy Swain, and Mrs. Tennyson Samells are still patients at the Port Perry Hospital. Tommy Hodge celebrated his birthday with his mother, grandmother, at their home on Sunday evening; with special dinner guests from Port Hope, brother John and friends, Wayne Campbell and Vera Crandall. On Sunday, February 25th, the area Beavers, Cubs, Souts, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers along with friends and relatives held a special "Thinking Day Service" at the St. John's Anglican Church, Blackstock. The church was full to over-flow- ing as members of the Scout and Guide Movement took part in Psalm, lessons and prayers. Mr. Rose preached an appropriate sermon on friends and friendship. Mr. Rose presented 'Religion In Life Emblems" to cubs, Craig Hoskin, Glen DeGeer, Robert ~~ Tobin, Robert Umphrey, Shawn Umphrey and Jeff Byers. Team Thursday, February 22 in conjunction with the Whitby Winter Carnival. The very enthusiastic Port team was beaten 9-6, but with a little bit of luck this could have been a different outcome. Port had two goals disallowed as the referee judged the stick to be in the crease. Penalties also played a large part in the game, 5 PeeWee 2 busy Thursday February 22 saw the boys play a 'select team" from the Pee Wee House League. The score ended 3-2 for the Stones. A second fun game was played Friday, February 23 when our defense played forward and the goalies played out. The score ended 3-3. Saturday, February 24 the boys were visitors at the Old Arena as they played the Canadian Tire Red Wings from Oshawa. The score ended 6-2 for the Red Wings. Scoring for Port Perry were Trevor Kennedy assisted by Jeff Wray and Kevin Fowler assisted by Dean Haugen. A rematch with this team is scheduled for Friday, March 2. BROOMBALL Troski's-0 Beacock's-0 This was a very close game as you can see by the score. There was a lot of good hard hits during the game. Shut-outs went to Bill Gerber of Troski's and to Rick McLean of Beacock's. The orchestra is again performing under the firm and inspiring baton of Roy V. Cox, Music director and conductor, but the guest artists are new to the Town Hall audience. The second guest artist is Leslie W. Mackett, the piano being his favourite instru- ment, but with a solid back- ground on various other Ada Lee, residing in Peter- borough, Ontario is an artist ° of many talents. She is an extremely fine vocalist with a repertoire of both classics and jazz. She also plays the piano very well, is an act- ress, writer and composer. Here in the Town Hall, she'll be giving her interpretations of Gershwin's many fine songs, including excerpts from his negro folk-opera Porgy and Bess. instruments, such as clarinet and violin. He will be performing on the piano here and play the beautiful solo part in Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Mr. Mackett is instructor in 'music and French at Kingsway College, Oshawa and plays the viola in Oshawa Symphony Orchestra as well. Obituary MABEL SAMELLS The death occured sudden- ly at the Community Nursing home of Mrs. Mabel Samells Wednesday, February 7th in her 86th year. Mrs. Samells was born in Myrtle, Ontario, on May 9, 1893. She was the daughter + of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Duff. Mrs. Samells married Russell Taylor in Myrtle, Ontario on March 12, 1919. Mrs. Samells then lived north of Chalk Lake until 1942. When Mrs. yg Samells and her husband Z moved to Myrtle, Ontario. g Mrs. Samells was pre- £ deceased by her husband in £ 1958 following his death. She = had lived in Ashburn and a) Guelph and then later she £Z resided in Port Perry, E Ontario and on September 17, 1977 Mrs. Samells married Norman Samells. E Mrs. Samells had attended ZS Church in Myrtle and g Ashburn in which she was a : E -- a £ E = z E g = E Mrs. Samells is survived by her husband Norman Samells, two daughters and one son, Mrs. Wm. Gardner (Bernice) of Ashburn; Mrs. Allan Bonnell (Blanche) of Willowdale and Douglas Taylor of Guelph. Also survived by 17 grandchild- ren, 10 great grandchildren; and sister of Lorne Duff and the late Bert Duff. The funeral service was conducted from the McDermott-Panabaker funeral home by the Rev.
