ee = wii pra ---- - Plan widening, reconstruction of highway 7A | A public information meeting has been called for early in June to discuss a proposed widening and reconstruction of Highway 7A from Manchester to the eastern boundary of Port Perry at the causeway. The preliminary design for this major piece of construc- tion was unveiled at the regular meeting of Scugog council March 1 and the tentative date for actual work on the project is set for 1981. The work would be done by the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Com- munications and because Highway 7A runs through the Township, the council was asked to comment on the initial design. The Scugog Roads com- mittee made several sugges- tions concerning the project at its meeting of February 22, and last Thursday night the full council adopted all but one of the recommen- dations. One of the most significant recommendations made by .the Roads Committee and adopted by council calls for a widening of the stretch of Highway 7A from Queen Street east to the causeway. This would entail two 12- foot driving lanes, and two parking lanes, each 10-feet wide. At the meeting last Thurs- day, Roads superintendent Ron MacDonald told council that the reconstruction of the highway from Manchester east to the western boundary of Port Perry may require an additional 20 feet on the north side and 17 feet on the south side for the widened roadway. Itis expected that 'Queen St. (From Pagel) . ly sits at about $100,000. The Roads Committee recommended that the lot levy fund be tapped for this $30,000, however, the full council would not go along "with this, preferring not to have to dig into this fund for road construction unless absolutely necessary. Although the figures in the report are described as "tentative", and the council has not yet made the final commitment, the fact that the engineering will be done this year is a pretty good indication that 1980 will be the year the project finally goes ahead. The tentative plans call for signal lights at the intersec- tion of Highway 7A and "Queen Street (the Brewer's Retail corner). : The plans would do away with the present eastern entrance into the Brewer's Store. Some members of council feel that a proposed single entrance and exit for the beer store should have a signal light, as the entire intersection is going to have lights, anyway. Council rejected a recommendation from the committee that a new entrance from the beer store lot be constructed onto the new road which is now being built into a subdivision on the north side of Queen Street. In addition to the request for a signal light at the beer store entrance, council also has asked the MTC to put up a 'pedestrian crossing light on 7A in the area of R.H. Cornish School; and regular traffic lights at the intersec- tion of 7A and Water Street and at.the entrance to the Port Perry Plaza. The 7A and Water Street intersection is one of the most conjested and dan- gerous in the Township, and in addition to the signal light, the council has asked the MTC to re-design the inter- section for right and left turn exits onto the provincial 'highway. The council also wants the -MTC to come up with cost estimates for the construc- tion of two stretches of concrete sidewalk along 7A, one in Manchester and the other on the south side of the highway from Port Perry -Plaza to Queen Street. If the MTC approves the request, the Township's share of the sidewalks cost .could be between 50 to 100 'per cent. The proposal and design for this project are still in the preliminary stages, and while 1981 has been sugges- ted as a possible date this has not been confirmed. No estimates of what the project might cost were given at the meeting of council last Thursday night. In addition to the proposed work on Highway 7A east from Manchester, the MTC - has tentative plans to recon- struct the stretch of Highway 12 north from Myrtle to Manchester and the possible date for starting this project is 1982. oo Early Bird Golfers In what appears to have become an annual ritual, Jack Cooper of Port Perry and Roy Whittington of Oshawa took to the Scugog ice last week to limber up their golf swings. This year, to make things a little interesting, they spray-painted the golf balls, "just to see who gets closest to the hole,'" said Mr. Whittington.
