They are names that have become part of our history, even our our heritage, culture. Names of famous battles that took place more than 60 years ago in Europe, during the Great War, a war that took a terrible toll of human life, where progress "on the battlefield was measured in yards, and when it finally ended on November 11, 1918, they said it was the war to end all wars. Ni That turned out to be a hollow prophecy, of course, as two decades later the forests and plains of Europe were again filled with the sounds of battle. Canada sent a lot of her sons into that First Great War; they enlisted willingly, perhaps even a little naively, looking on it as a kind of adventure, not knowing that by the time it was over, many of their comrades would no longer be with them. 'For most Canadians in 1979, the First Great War is just something they have read about in the history books. Many of the veterans who did return have since passed away. The others are now into their eighties and nineties. Society tends to forget that more than .60 years ago they fought and died for this country. . For the past 17 years, however, the Port Perry Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has or- ganized an Old Bills Night, an evening of celebration and fellowship to honour the PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., March 28, 1979 -- 9 -- Old Bills not forgotten replacements for the men lost at the battle .of the Somme." Pvt. Tommy Holmes was in the same machine gun company and at Paschen- dale, C.A. watched Holmes as he won a Victory Cross, the highest medal for valour awarded by Great Britain. "We were pinned down by a German pill-box. Holmes just crawled out of the trench, and by himself he knocked out that pill-box." - Later on in the war, C.A. won the Military Medal which says in the inscription 'on the back 'for bravery in the field." He remembers how it happened. '"We came under an artillery barrage from point-blank range and the commanding officer said to me, "Glass, get a bunch of men together and clean those ------- out." : The battle at Vimy Ridge took a horrendous toll in human life, and C.A. recalls that out of his gun crew of eight, only himself and the sargeant survived. "But I was always easy going and carefree,"' he says. 'Some men had a premonition of dying, but not me." ; Port Perry more than 40 When the Armistice was finally signed on November 11,1918, C.A. was in an army hospital in France, recover- ing from a shrapnel wound in the foot. A year later he arrived back in Toronto with the regiment, 'was demobilized and returned to Ambherst Island, near Kingston. After spending a few years in Western Canada, he came to years ago. He has never been back to either England or France. What does Old Bills Night mean to him? "We always have a great time," he said. '""The Legion has been wonderful to me, to all of us." Mrs.. Glass probably summed it up best when she said: '"When you start to get a little older, it means a lot to know that you have not been forgotten." by John B. McClelland men who served this country in the First Great War. It will be held March. 31 at ; 'the Legion in Port-Perry and ~ organizers told the Star they expect that more than 40 Old Bills will be there. There are some 25 from the Scugog area invited, another 16 will come from Sunnybrooke Hospital in Toronto, and seven from the Uxbridge area. : Ed Mason told- the Star that the idea for Old Bills Night was conceived in 1962 by John Maw, the late Ken Huntley of the Uxbridge Legion, and himself.
