That is the way guest speaker Elmer Simms described the contribution to Canada made by men who served and fought in Canada's armed forces during the First World War, as he addressed a full house at the Port Perry Legion Saturday night. The occasion was Old Bills Night, an annual affair put on by the Legion to honour the surviving veterans from the First World War who are known as Old Bills. More than 30 of them were present, a lot of them wear- ing medals they earned for their part in that conflict more than 60 years ago. Most of the Old Bills were from the Port Perry and Uxbridge areas, and they were joined by a contingent from Sunnybrooke Hospital in" Toronto who arrived by special Red Cross bus. It was a night to remember their accomplishments, pay tribute and say thanks, and there were glowing words of praise from all the head table guests. Special guest speaker Elmer Simms of North Bay, a long time Legion member and provincial executive officer, paid high tribute to the Old Bills, citing their courage, bravery, and sacri- fice. "They deserve a place in our history," said Mr. Simms. the history of this country, Canadians fought during the First War regiments and their accom- plishments helped to bring the country together. "They went up the Ridge at Vimy as Albertans and Nova Scotians, and 'came down the other side as Cana- dians," said Mr. Simms. During his address he mentioned the quality of the Canadian soldier during the Great War, and the fact that they were used as -shock troops. Mr. Simms said that during the war both sides acknowledged that the Canadian troops were second to none in fighting skills and bravery. - All of the Old Bills present received small gifts from the Legion as momentos of the evening, and Old Bill Fred Cavannaugh thanked the Legion for the hospitality of the evening. He mentioned the" fact that for the first time in ¥ in their own Branch 419 chairman John Maw [left] presents a ' token of appreciation to guest speaker Elmer Simms of North Bay. G.
