Diane Burt Silver Cup winner Diane Burt of Port Perry won the Schlitz Silver Cup after beating out ten other finalists in her age group at the NASTAR amateur ski racing finals held at Park City, Utah over the weekend. Mrs. Burt was the only Canadian among the eighty finalists in a variety of age groups for both men and women amateur slalom racers. She is a member of the Sky Loft Ski Club, Uxbridge, and qualified for the NASTAR finals in Utah while on holiday in Aspen, Colorado, in February. The 80 men and women who reached the finals were the best of among 175,000 entrants who raced on giant slalom courses at 96 ski areas this winter across the United States. The Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee sponsors NASTAR (National Standards Race) which is a Ski magazine program operated by World-Wide Ski Corp. Port Perry's player-coach Rob Evans attributed the title win to solid teamwork. "It was a good team effort," he stated, "We stayed out of the penalty box for a change." He explained that the latter fact was one of the keys to Ps & victory. The coach admitted that his team had missed Bill Owen and Ken Bryant, forcing them to go with two backliners. Evans agreed that key performers for Port were Mark Lee, Ron Redman, and Keith Fraser. He neglected to mention his own name but he too was a star of the series. ¥ This Port Perry Ringette All-star team won the Consolation Championship recently in Oro Township Houseleague Tournament. We then played the hometown team from Oro for the Consolation Final A toe to toe battle ensued with Port going ahead for the first time with only four minutes to go in the game. The insurance marker, a minute later, ensured our6-4 win over Oro. It was a truly exciting well played Ringette game which showed the poise, discipline, and true competitiveness of our hometown girls. Scoring for Port was Karen Young, with four goals; Brenda Foote with the all important first goal to get us moving and Sherri Allen with one. Assists credited to Wendy McDougall, Daphne Butt, Tracy Filion, and Chris English. Cindi Heurkins and Wendy Burton were fantas- tic between the pipes.
