) v3 Ab] [2 JR > RY 2% Stained glass windows: a traditional craft by Carlene Kirby For anyone who has dreamed of the beauty of a stained-glass window in their home, two Durham residents are now prepared to help. Dan Stone of Port Perry began designing custom stained glass about four years ago. In January of 1979, he joined forces with a co-worker at Oshawa General Hospital, Mrs. Chris Montgomery of Oshawa, and they became The Glass Hoppers. Shorthorn club . annual dinner The annual Durham County Shorthorn Club Banquet was an excellent success again this year. The Banquet was held on Wednesday evening, April 11, at the Recreation Centre in Blackstock. More than 140 tickets were sold for this year's event. President Bill Slater of Orono welcomed the guests to this year's dinner. The president introduced the Head Table guests Laura Buttery Shorthorn Lassie, Mrs. K. Buttery, Ted Buttery, Stanley Taylor, David Davidson, Mrs. Frosch, Glenn Frosch, Mrs. Slater and Bill Slater, president of the club. The guest speaker, Mr. Jerry Krauter, a training co-ordinator from the Department of Agriculture was introduced by Mr. David Davidson. Mr. Ted Buttery thanked the guest speaker on behalf of the club and presented him with a can of maple syrup to take home. The Blackstock U.C.W. again provided an excellent dinner and they were thank- ed by Director Mr. David Beath. Coloured slides of Shorthorn cattle were shown. A group of young people from Orono supplied excel- When these craftspeople began their business, which they operate out of their homes, they had the idea of getling away from the church window outlook. What they didn't realize was the enthusiasm people had for this very old art. Dan and Chris work together on many of their pieces, which are displayed in small shops just outside of Toronto, in Bowmanville and in Hampton. They are hoping to put some examples lent music during the evening. Don Adams and company provided excellent music with his Blue Grass Band. The club would especially like to thank the Durham Farmers Co-op, Coronation Cafe, Analda' Nursery, Wallace Marlow Co. Ltd. Swain Seed Cleaners and any others who contributed prizes to this event. In order to raise funds for the Club Auctioneer Cliff Pethick sold 3 cakes and 2 pies for a total price of $41.00. The club wishes to have new members. Durham Region Science Fair This year the Durham Region Science Fair will be held at Henry Street High School in Whitby on April 19th and 20th. Exhibitors present will be ready, willing and quite able to explain their projects to visitors. The projects on display come from grades 7 - 13 students in the region's public schools and are classified into two categor- ies, Biological and Physical Science. Students whose exhibits appear at the regional fair have worked their way up through the many school Pine Wood derby race by Paul Saulnier Wolf Cubs of Pine Ridge District are gearing up for their annual Pine Wood Derby race. Thi event is one highlight of cubbing where father and son get involved. A race car is made from a 6" pine block and it races on a 36° track. Trophies for speed and design are up for grabs and miles of fun. The 1979 race will be held in Manchester Hall starting April 27 until April 29. A total of 254 kits were sold this year.
