18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, April 18, 1979 Ska SS | LOr PeeWees reach semifinals in Little NHL Tournament by Danny Millar The curtain came down on another season for the Port Perry Pee Wee Legionaires on Easter Sunday, April 15th as they bowed to the Richmond Hill Rams 4-0 in, the semi-final of the Oshawa Little NHL Tournament. The Legion team had ad- vanced to the semi-finals with one point wins over Oshawa Dines and Whitby. The Richmond Hill team was a very powerful one and they outskated and generally outplayed Port during the contest which was held at the Donevan Sports 'Complex. The Rams were a well disciplined and smooth skating team. The Rams began their scoring 44 seconds after the puck had been dropped to start the game. Kevin Ryan forced the Port defenders to cough up the puck inside their own blue line and then skated in untouched on goal- tender Paul Kingston and scored on a slick deke. The Legion defencemen were consistently guilty of giving the disc away in their own end of the rink and only the HE] \ sharp play of Kingston and Port's other netminder Paul Bateman kept the score respectable. Kingston was shaken up just fifty seconds after the goal when he was hit in a wild scramble in front of him. He was relieved by Bateman for a couple of minutes. With slightly over half the first period remaining the Rams grabbed a two goal lead on a three-on-two break. Paul Joslin connected from Kevin McInness and Scott Steckly. After ten minutes there was really no doubt that Richmond Hill would win the match. They were in control all the way and showed no indication of letting up. They looked every bit as good as they appeared to be in their first two games which they won by 8-0 and 7-0 margins. The Rams struck again just 46 seconds into the second period when Kevin Ryan went around Jeff Johnstone with ease and passed to Orveo Paoletti who tucked the puck in behind Kingston. NAD oN Port Perry's only serious scoring opportunity of the game came when David Kemp fired a slap shot from 15 feet out which was stopped by Glen Harding who earned the shutout for the Rams. With 4:02 left in period number two Kingston was replaced by Bateman for good. This alternating system has been employed by Legionaire Coach Ron McAllister all season long. Bateman finished the route allowing only one goal against. ' In the last period of the semi-final Richmond Hill blew a golden opportunity to increase their lead when they had a two man advan- tage. Port killed it off with no major problems. Joslin got his second of the game with 59 seconds remaining to conclude the scoring. In the last desperation attempt to avoid being shut out, Bateman was removed in favour of a sixth attacker. The effort went for naught though. Darrin Desautels netted the first Port goal with 3:22 elapsed on the clock. It was an unassisted effort that came as a result of a scramble for a loose puck in front of the Whitby goal. It was the only marker of a very fast, action-filled period. Some sharp net- minding by Whitby's Darren Short prevented the score from being greater. After 6:34 of the middle session Port Perry's Jeff Johnstone and Whitby's Paul Guest engaged in a brief scrap. For Johnstone it was his first of two minor tussles in the tourney. Neither amounted to much. Desautels set up a third period goal when he fed Johnstone with a cross rink pass inside the opposition's blue line. Johnstone lofted a wrist shot over the Whitby netminder's shoulder. Whitby added a power play score late in the period but it was not enough. In addition, they pulled their goalie but could not tie it up. Earlier in the week Port Perry defeated Oshawa Dines 3-2. Ay] ~ INS, DI 2A . The D+H will be named as a tenth player as in the Ameri- can Baseball League. Also included is a free substitu- tion rule allowing the playing of players in the game on two occasions. Another change to affect the local area is the addition of "D"" series in Squirt, Peewee, Bantam and Midget. This is for villages under 1500 population. Slow Pitch will now have 5 series. These governed by population also. All Slow Pitch championships shall be declared by tournament play. The delegates also passed to hold tournament cham- pionship play in senior "B"", hit.
