Wackett and Smith are both in grade 13 and Smith was this year's student council president. This past year, will no doubt be an unforgettable one for Miss Smith. She has competed in tennis, going to the all-Ontar- io championships with Leslie Forder, volleyball, and bask- etball. This year Wackett competed in football, hock- ey, and Track and field. There were thirteen indi- vidual awards handed out to at High School the Most valuable Perform-- ers of the year in each sport. Two special plaques were awarded from the basketball teams for contributions made. In addition, 20 gradu- ating athletes were given trophies for having. partici- pated in a sport for at least the last three years. The first MVP trophy was handed to soccer player Lodi Raffin by last year's winner Leon Tapper. Lori Clark, who did a sensational job in heading up the cheerleading squad was given a gift by her peers and Mrs. Cathy Crocker. Lisa Nottingham won the girl's gymnastics award from coach Patricia Smith. Ski team coach Larry Burt was put in the awkward position of having to give that sport's trophy to his daughter Virginia. The younger Burt definitely had the credentials to win as she had never finished lower than third in a race. Shelly Yurko won the Archery award from Mr. London. President-elect Steve McIntyre of the boys Athletic Association game the Intra- mural Hockey MVP to Greg Carrierre. In the second year of the Swim team's existence, Pam Colin Wackett and Kat i fusigrines ish Byers handed the award to its best performer Joanne Sytsma. Mary-Jean Elliot was the best volleyball performer ac- cording to coach Mr. Doble. Qosterman is one of the best 400 meter runners in the area and competes in that event and the relay 'in the regional championships at Brockville on the next weekend. He and George Cope were the head of the athletic association this year and played a huge part in setting up the highly successful evening. Port Perry took a one run lead in the top of the third inning and held on until the bottom of the fifth when Bradford staged a come- back, scoring five runs be- fore being retired. The Port girls could not muster any more offence and with Brad- ford scoring one more run in the sixth inning the game ended with a 6-1 score. Karen Young and Janie Thornton split the pitching duties. Chris Donnelly scored the only Port run and was given the star of the game. The following night, at home, Port Perry bounced back and shut out the Stouff- ville ladies team by a 17-0 by Danny Millar Port Perry juvenile soft- ball team won their first game of the season at home on Thursday, May 31st whe they came from behind to defeat Galea of Oshawa 4-2. Starting righthanders Kevin Walker of Port and John Bruddeck pitched three trouble free innings before Galea scored. Walker was aided by a fielding gem from shortstop George Burnett who fielded a sharply hit ball to his left, ran and touched second and then threw out the hitter, seemingly in one motion. Second baseman Curt Pinkowski was also steady defensively. Galea surrounded Walker in the fourth when Burnett booted an easy double play ball. Walker then walked in two runs forcing Ian Hartung to warm up on the sidelines. Janie Thornton, in her first start of the season, went the distance and struck out seven batters. The girls made up for their lack of offence in the previous game by knocking out twenty-six hits including home runs; one by Carol Wilton and two by Kim Owen, the second of these being a grand slam, Not only was the team hitt- ing well but they played a strong game defensively allowing only five Stouffville batters to reach base. A good two way effort earned Val Sweetman the star of the game. The girls are now three and one on the season and are going to have to be considered for the top spot this year. Greg Fedyk led off the inning with an infield single and then stole 'second. He scored when Curt Pinkowski singled to centerfield. After an identical single scored Pin- kowski with the tying run Bruddek was chased. Rez- isnki immediately served up a walk to Steve Redman and then Dave Dickson beat out a beautiful bunt to load the bases with yellow shirts.
