SARS we, by Danny Millar Port Perry Canadian Tire mens' team has come out of the gate flying in Lake Scu- gog Softball League action. The team won two games last week to bring their record to five wins, one loss. On Wednesday, May 30th they outgunned Janetville 12- 11at home and on Sunday, June 3rd they nipped Nestle- ton 4-3 in ten innings. In the Wednesday night game Janetville got off to a quick start when they jump- ed on Port starter Larry Brown. Janetville counted a run in the first inning but left the bases loaded. Port Perry answered with two runs in their half of the first but the visitors chased Brown off the rubber in the LDL LLDIDLDDLLIDDDDDDIDIDLDIODIIEIIDIDEDES8EEIEEE second with five runs. He left with two out and a runner on first. All the runs were not his fault as two runs crossed the plate when right fielder Jeff Boyce misjudged an easy fly ball. The ball dropped over his head for a three base error. Despite this Brown's first start in Senior ball in two years was not impressive. Right hand- ed reliever Kevin Walker also had some problems, as both gave up numerous hits. Port tightened the score in the second when Doug Scott tripled in two runs and event- ually scored himself. Janet- ville regained a two run lead with a run in their half of the third. For the first time in the game Port took the lead as Chevette y Ford Pinto V.W. Walker tied the score at seven when he came home on an 'excuse me' single and a sacrifice fly later in the inning brought in two runs. The game settled down for a couple of innings. It was a rather sloppily played match with several errors and poor pitching on both sides. At the end of the contest Port Perry counted 16 hits to Janet- ville's 11. Six hitters from the home team struck out and Brown and Walker com- bined to fan five visitors. In the sixth, Janetville got three runs to knott the game at ten. They stole the lead in the next inning when catcher Healy was hit with a foul tip. The runner scored from third as Healy lay on the ground. The lead did not last long as Port netted two more in the bottom of the eighth. Healy drove in a run with a single to shallow left field. Janetville went down qui- etly in the top of the ninth. FIGHT GAME Canadian Tire put on a more impressive Sun- day when they" of Nestleton in extra . Nestleton had handed Port its only loss of the season. Nestleton opened the scor- ing with two runs in the second inning. Shortstop George Wilson led off with a single and advanced to sec- ond on a wild pitch. On another wild pitch he went to third. Randy Prosser walk- ed and then stole second. Randy McLeod loaded the bases with a walk. Rangy righthander Jeff Boyce came in to pitch with three on and none out. One of the most exciting plays in the game occurred when Wilson scored on a perfect suicide squeeze but. It worked once so Nestleton tried it again. This time third baseman Mark Lee fielded the ball and elected to go for the out at first, allow- ing a run to score. Nestleton's last run came in the third when Grant McLaughlin led off with a single and stole second. He scored on a long fly ball to right field by Wilson. Port Perry got one run back in the fourth when Bill Owen, whom coach Doug Scott called the most im- proved player on the team, doubled off McLeod and was a AP NOW! In this game Port played very conservatively. Any- time a runner made it to first the following hitter was usu- ally ordered to, sacrifice. The theory is a good one for a close, low scoring game but in a shootout it prevents a big rally by the hitting team. The game slowed down into something of a pitching duel between Boyce and McLeod. It seemed as though Boyce got stronger in the late innings as McLeod became tired. Owen tripled in the top of the ninth to lead the Port comeback. Lee walked and then trotted into second with a stolen base. A long fly ball by pinch hitter Ron Redman scored Owen. Lee came across with a controversial tying run when a overthrown ball landed in the Nestleton bench but came back into play. After Boyce and Phil Cochrane got on base McLeod was given his walk- ing papers in favour of Jay Sharp. Sharp retired the final out. Rob Evans, who came in to play catcher late in the contest, opened the tenth when he beat out a bunt. However the Port Perry Snowmobile Club tries to keep active even during the off season. Our Banquet and Awards night was held April 21, 1979 at the Latcham Centre with about 15 landowners present as well. Trophies were handed out for the winners of the games days events held during the winter months. We were pleased to see several of the landowners present for the evening and I would like to take this oppor- tunity to personally say thank-you for allowing us to use your property for our trails. } Not too much activity has taken place at the site of our new clubhouse as yet but several members have been working hard levelling and staking out the site. I'm sure though that very shortly our membership will be getting phone calls asking for help. I'll try to keep you informed as work on the clubhouse progresses. During the year our mem- bers are often asked to help at some club function and at 'the end of the year a dance is held to say thank-you to Snowmobilers enjoy banquet and awards these workers. the Apprec- iation Dance was held last Saturday, June 2, 1979 at the Latcham Centre and once again our entertainment lady Betty Smith did a super job. Several of our summer events, such as picnics, ball- games and camp-outs, have been amalgamated into one week-end, June 22,23,24,1979 when we have been invited to attend the Summer Jambor- ee held by the Kemptville snowmobile Klub. I under- stand several of our mem- bers are planning to go, and Herb Payne has agreed to look after bookings etc. and lead the way.
