a ~. ARS a, = at 18-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 13, 1979 SRO SP Mike Patton scores personal best in tough All-Ontario competition by Danny Millar The sporting year at Port Perry High School extended to the very last day of classes as Mike Patton competed in the senior boys high jump competition in all-Ontario meet in Etobicoke. The meet was held on Friday, June 8. Also slated to compete in the Redmen colours was the Senior boys relay team. The team originally was not scheduled to go to the Ontar- io Federation School Athletic Association meet as they had been eliminated last week in Brockville in the East Reg- ionals. But one of the higher placed teams notified Port that they could not compete, thereby leaving a vacant spot to which Port Perry had every right. They lost their chance to compete in the final meet of the year on an unfortunate oversight by Port Perry coach Jerry Cole. He had informed the team that they would not be competing until 7:55 that evening. The three boys (Patton was already present) decided to come down to Etobicoke after the school day had been com- pleted, with coach Paul Arc- ulus. What Mr. Cole did not count on was the fact that there would be elimination races for the relay event. These took place at about. five o'clock Friday after- noon. They arrived about half an hour late and were understandably disappoint- ed. '"'Annoying" was the mildest term used by the members to describe their obvious frustration. Patton finished 12th in his event behind winner Milton Ottey of Timothy Eaton in Toronto. Ottey so easily defeated the field that he did not stop jumping until he had & ALBERT AUTO NJ Q. failed in three trys at 2.18 meters. (Seven feet, one and three quarter inches.) Patton soared to a person- al best of 1.95 meters, one centimeter higher than he jumped at Brockville. He made his first three jumps of 1.75, 1.80, and 1.85 with ease. He failed at 1.90 in his first attempt but made it in his next jump. When the bar was raised another five cent- imeters he looked elimina- tion straight in the eye as he did not clear it in the first two jumps. He remained in the competition when he made it on the third. He was not as fortunate at the two meter mark as he missed on three attempts. Afterwards Patton had mixed emotions about his jumping. "I'm really pleased," he said, but added "I would've liked to have been in the top ten." He felt that a 15 minute delay in which the bar had been broken before his trys at two meters, had hamper- ed his ping. ' ~ Tit ope oo AWE that he has two years of high school eligibility remaining and he should be a contending threat. "I'm getting ready for next year," he declared. He is considering joining the Oshawa track club for the summer. Juveniles drop Oshawa team in close, exciting game by Danny Millar The Port Perry Mother's Pizza juveniles came from behind to win a dramatic 6-5 decision over Ontario Motor Supply of Oshawa in the bottom of the seventh inning. George Burnett scored the winning run on a throwing error by Doug O'Donnell. The game was played at the Joe Fowler park on Thurs- day, June 7th. Port Perry stole the game from the visitors. They had gone into the home half of the sixth trailing four runs, They tied it at five in that inning and set the stage for the winner in the next sess- ion. Burnett got on base when his fly ball to left field fell in, enabling him to get in scor- ing position. He scored when catcher Doug O'Donnell overthrew Dave Dickson's sacrifice bunt at first. One player who went un- noticed in the scoring statist- ics for Port was catcher Mike Doupe. Doupe ended potential Oshawa rallies on three occasions when he Lf 585 KING STREET 085-3311 DON'T NEGLECT THE EXTRAS THAT gunned down runners at- tempting to steal. Two second inning triples by Al Boivin and O'Donnell counted for two Oshawa runs off starter and winning pitch- er Kevin Walker. Walker went the full route allowing 11 hits and fanning eight. Boivin started but gave way to Ian McNanee in the big Port sixth inning. Port's key frame was started by Burnett who led off with a double. Dickson followed by getting on be- cause of second baseman Jerry Ogden's error. Boivin gave a free pass to Greg Fedyk and suddenly found himself surrounded in yellow shirts. Scugog B Jaguars lose season opener to Oshawa Rangers by Danny Millar The Scugog B Jaguars of the Scugog Soccer Club started their season off on the wrong foot when they were overpowered 6-1 by the visiting Oshawa Rangers on Wednesday, June 6th. The game was played on the field beside Port Perry High School. The team is coached by Barry Page and managed by Rick Weeden. Oshawa was led by two fine offensive players in Alan Cain and Marty Korsten who had two goals each. Marco Mangolini was the third Ranger who boasted of offen- sive firepower as he contrib- uted a goal and an assist. Oshawa controlled the en- tire first half as Scugog never mounted a serious offensive threat. Cain open- ed the scoring after Oshawa had forced the home team into making several errors and would not allow them to clear the ball. He beat goaltender Michael Connolly 'after Connelly had made the initial stop. Connolly had little chance on the play. Mangolini added his own score a short time later when he took the ball right from the kickoff and scored. Steven Pitts added the fourth goal of the first half as the Rangers threatened to run away with the contest. But they did not run away with it. Scugog opened the second half with a goal by Paul Bateman and then ap- péared to grow more confi- dant as they applied the pressure. It was not until late in the game that the visitors re- gained control when Robert Danielli kicked in a shot after the ball had been head- ed three times. Oshawa came on after the goal and soon it was no longer a competitive match. Cain added the last goal in the dying minutes for the victory HOME IMPROVEMENTS pT EEE TE TTT TTT TET *
