18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 1, 1979 'SRO SPO Deciding match this Thursday Bantams split playoff opener by Danny Millar The Port Perry Bantams softball team split two games against Stouffville in the first round of playoffs in the York-Durham League. Port Perry hosted the first game on Monday, July 23 and were mauled 16-6 in an awful game. They gained revenge with a 6-3 win three nights later in Stouffville. The Lions have been plagued by inconsistency all season and early action in the post-season competitions indicates that this will not niainsinQulunaunnuauisinoumnnaunnnc MINI CINEMA 85.5535 change. Whe at their best the Lions are one of the smoothest fielding teams in the league backed by solid pitching. At thuir worst they are just awful, as they were in the first game. Phil Robinson blanked Stouffville for two innings before the roof caved in. A hit and {wo wa'ks loaded the ases. Robinson proceeded > walk in two runs and nother run scored when an 2asy fly ball was dropped in the outfield. Another base on balls brought another runner Friday: 7&9 P.M. Robinson was chased in the fifth inning with runners on first and second with none out. These men had reached base on walks. His successor was southpaw Pete Christie. Christie followed suit by. quickly serving up a wild pitch to put both opponents in scoring position. Although he was not impressive later in the match, Christie did retire the side. Port Perry threatened in the fifth but this outburst was quelled when center- fielder Ken Donnelly and rightfielder Craig Curtis made excellent running catches. If the third frame wasn't nightmarish enough for Port there was the seventh when Stouffville scored nine runs. Christie found himself surr- ounded when he served up a base hit and two walks. Three runs counted before Christie was removed in fav- our of Robinson who came in from rightfield. The new thrower found himself in the familiar, but unenviable, position of having the bags filled with nobody out. At that point Port Perry was trailing 11-0. A walk and a grand slam run later Port Perry found themselves down a woeful 16-0. The Lions managed three runs in the sixth, not because of their own merit, but on Stouffville miscues. Clay Lovering scored from third base on a wild pitch by Dave Mahaffev and Keith Trem- blay counted from the same spot when the visitors' catch- er threw the ball past Mahaf- fey or the return throw. After John Bloeman walked Mahaffey was removed in favour of Barry Greenshield. Christie raced home with the third run of the inning when the new hurler threw the ball into the screen. In the bottom of the sev- enth Donnie Young and Lov- ering walked and both event- ually counted on wild pitch- es. The Lions got a run they deserved when Tremblay was driven in from second on a single. Robinson won the second game of the week to even the best of three series at a win each. The final game is played at Stouffville on Thursday, August 2. Squirts whip Claremont by 23-5 margin by Danny Millar The Port Perry Legion- naires Squirts resumed their winning ways in York- Durham Softball League play as they walloped Claremont 23-5 on Thursday, July 26, in Claremont. After dropping several games in the last two weeks the Legionnaires record now stands at ten wins, five losses, and one tie. Jeff Norton started the game for Port and after throwing for six innings the Port Perry braintrust of coaches Garnet Warriner, Ted Culbert, and Manager Paul Solomon decided to give John Moore, a second baseman, a chance to pitch. In his one inning of duty on the hill Moore struck out one. Norton fanned ten in the previous six. Port exploded for seven runs in the third and seventh innings. They also added four runs in inning number five and thrée more in the sixth. Dave Burnett and Greg "Varriner were leaders in the offensive barrage as they each scored four runs. Manager Solomon predic- tably was pleased with the outcome. "They played smart baseball tonight (Thursday)" he stated. "Everyone hit well." The Legionnaires take on Uxbridge in the first round of Ontario Amateur Softball Association playoffs in early August. Port should ad- vance past the initial round if they play consistently and get quality pitching. Out- fielder Lee Wilbur, the team's best hitter, and Dave Burnett will be the keys in the offence department. Defensively, the trip of hurlers, Jeff Cockerton, Norton, and Ron Brown will have to come up big. These players have shown they can play sound, fundamental ball at times.
