and never succeed. A once in a lifetime dream was realized last Wednesday by Don Young of Port Perry when he sank a hole-in-one at Sunnybrae Golf Course. Don was playing with five friends when he teed-off on the 155 yard sixth hole with a five iron and sank the shot. This is only his third year at the sport and has now accomplished what many golfers spend a lifetime trying to achieve..... . Blues on short end of score, layoff hurt Ask any coach, whether the sport is football, hockey, or baseball, and they will all agree on one point; that a long layoff does nobody any good. This was well illustrat- ed Tuesday night as the Port Perry Ladies Softball team travelled to Zephyr for their first game in two weeks and came out on the short end of a 3-2 score. As the score indicates, it was no batting duel as the two sides were only able to muster eight hits each over the seven inning game. Port Perry put the first mark on the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Karen | 7 66 Brock St. W., ; Uxbridge 852-5291 . D. THAPAR DENTURE THERAPIST 214 Dundas St. E., n Whitby 668-7797 Young led off with a single over second base, Valerie Sweetman moved Karen across the plate with a dou- ble shot and scored herself on a line drive base hit by Lori Lynde. Port held onto this margin until the bottom of the sixth frame, when with runners on second and third and two out, a hit driven towards the Port Perry shortstop took a ridiculous bounce and sailed over her head, allowing the two base runners to score. A safe hit by the Zephyr pitcher then knocked in the final and winning run. Down by that one run in their final at bat, 163 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa 579-8752 the Blues tried to stage another of their last minute rallies but unfortunately the side was retired with two girls stranded on base. Karen Young threw a strong game on the mound and Lynn Cook picked up the star of the match working the receiving end of the pitches. Seven days after being trounced 18-8 by Janet- ville Port Perry Canadian Tire senior softball team returned the favour by drub- bing the league leaders 12-1, on Wednesday, July 25. On Sunday, July 29 Port Perry was edged 64 by Yelverton in an entertaining match. Phil Cochrane pitched both games for Port and he gave creditable performances. In the Yelverton match he suff- ered through one bad inning, the second, when the hosting team scored four runs. George Hamilton reached base on shortstop Ron Red- man's error and Dale Stin- son singled to left field. Redman is usually the team's centerfielder and he looked unsure of himself at the new position. Being a lefthander did not help as he had to make a wider turn to throw a ball to first of second. The two men on base were counted when Wayne Timms homered to right field. Vaughn McGill tripled and eventually scored on a sacri- fice fly by Rick Jaynes. McGill was nearly thrown out at the plate on an excell- ent throw by rightfielder Bill Owen. Owen has proven to be a good fielder, demon- strating fine range on sever- al long running catches. He is a good extra base hitter who drives in many runs. He usually bats fourth or fifth. Combined with Charlie Dur- ward and Bill St. John he gives the outer defence three fine arms and good fielding. There is a small school in Yelverton which stands on the left field grass. Any ball which is hit on top of the building is a home run. Yelverton catcher, Larry Alldred, reached the target in the third when he blasted a Cochrane delivery over the head of Durward. The ball landed on the edge of the homer territory. There was one aboard at the time. Port Perry had numerous chances to get back in the game but none was more inviting than in the fifth when they loaded the bases on righthander Dale Stinson with nobody away. And then, one of the rarest situa- tions in the sport occurred as Don Phinney and Bill St. John both hit into the infield fly rule. Port came away empty handed when Ken Bryant flied to left. Port Perry got a run back in their half of the sixth inning when Cochrane hit his second double of the game. Rob Evans moved him to third with an excellent bunt single. Evans moved into scoring position when Yel. verton caught him in a run- down but let him slip away when Cochrane started fo home. Earlier in the game a carbon copy of the play saw the Port Perry pitcher caught at home. Cochrane eventually scored on an in- field out by Redman. Owen showed his arm again in the sixth when he gunned down Timms as the runner tried to stretch a single into a two bagger. Stinson ran into trouble in the top of the seventh frame when St. John put his first pitch onto the school roof. The hurler's second offering resulted in another run when Don Phinney tripled and then scored on an overthrow. St. John wrapped up the scoring when he rounded the bases in the top of the ninth via a round tripper on the schoolhouse. Port Perry looked awsome against Janetville as they scored in six separate sess- ions, including five runs in the second. Phinney opened the inning by doubling off Graham White and was driven in by a Mike Healy single. Doug Scott tripled in two more runs. Rob Evans delivered Scott and himself when he hit an inside the park home run. As is Port custom lately, all the runs came with two out. After the dust had cleared Port Perry scored 12 runs on 14 hits and did not make an error. Janetville's sole run came on two hits against four errors. Cochrane doub- led White in the strikeout department 8-4.
