Local teams draw blank in tournament .Continued De Jong greeted Mcleod with a single past the short- stop and then went to third on a double. Woermke load- ed the bases for Barry Mc- Lure who cleaned them off with a single that went through the centerfielder's legs. McLure scored on a fly to deep left by Sinclair. Sinclair is a dead pull hitter who possesses the team's key long ball threat. Port Perry chased Mcleod with this rally and Nestleton brought in lefty Donnie Timms. Port added their final run in the fifth when Sinclair hit a two bagger which landed just inside the left field foul line to score Mclure who had singled. Nestleton won two games. On Saturday they nipped - Brooklin 4-3 behind Timms' and scored a resounding 5-1 upset over the Nestleton Jets. Nestleton came in as an early favourite. They had strengthened their line-up, as did most other teams entered, with players from other teams. Brent Fallis was brought in to play first base from Pontypool. The Jets received a big blow when catcher Rob Munrow injured his foot against Brooklin and was finished from further competition. This occurred on Saturday and the next day he showed up at the game on crutches. Munrow was healthy against Port Perry but was powerless to stop his side from losing. Randy Mcleod, Jets starting righthander, surrendered four runs in the bottom of the third after Munroe had given him a lead in the Jets half of the same session. Dennis Romeril led off the Jets by reaching first on an infield hit and then stealing second. He advanced one more bag be- fore Munroe scored him with a single. Squirts whip Claremont by Danny Millar The Port Perry Legion- naire Squirt softball team won a one-sided, redundant game over visiting Clare- mont on Thursday, August 2 by a 25-14 margin. The outcome of the game had already been decided before each team took the field because Claremont showed up with only seven players, two less than a full platoon. Because of this, the visitors had to forfeit. Two athletes from Port Perry's unit played for Claremont in the match that was reduced to the status of an exhibition game. Craig Menzies was a maj- or cog in the offensive Le-- gionnaire machine as he en- joyed a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate. He chipped in four runs. Dave Burnett was also a key player as he drove in four runs and had three hits in four trips to the batter's box. ro The big inning for Port was the third when they received home runs from Chris Cook- man and Lee Wilbur. They notched seven other runs in this round. Inthe next frame they touched Claremont pitching for four more runs. Claremont almost match- ed the third inning outburst of the Legionnaires with a rally of their own in the top of the same frame as they scored seven runs. Jeff Norton was the victim of the onslaught but managed to stay around long enough to pick up the win. Combined with Ron Brown, the Port Perry pitchers whiffed five hitters. Port Perry Legionnaires slate now stands at 11-5-1 with three games remaining in the York-Durham league schedule. They meet Ux- bridge in the opening round of Ontario Amateur Softball Association playdowns. Ux- bridge is in the same circuit as Port Perry. They were eliminated on Monday by the Merchants by a slend- - & er 4-3 count. One other local team, the Greenbank Gamblers, was a major disappointment as they lost in three games. - The Gamblers play in the same circuit as the Port team and they are way ahead in the league. They were beaten 7-3 by Lindsay, lost a squeaker 3-2 to Kedron after rallying for the two runs, and were out of the meet following a loss to the Pontypool Generals Sunday. The second Port Perry entry, Canadian Tire, also disappointed as they won only one game and did not advance to the eliminations. They pounded the hapless Udora Junior Shamrocks 12- 5 before dropping matches to two of the top teams, 5-2 to Ontario Motor Sales of Osh- awa, and Sunderland Har- vestors 6-4. Port Perry struck for six runs in the second against Udora, who were possible the weakest team entered. The play which eptomized Udora's strength happened when Ken Bryant was liter- ally given a run. Bryant got on with an infield base hit, went to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a passed ball. He scored when Shamrock's hurler Ron 'Wagg tried to throw the ball under the plate. At the end of the inning Wagg disgustedly threw his glove into the bench and when he was ejected for it, proceeded to label the home plate umpire with every ob- scene name that has ever been thought up. Port notched threé more scores in the top of the sixth. Rob Evans led it off with a safety and then crossed the plate when a Ron Redman hit escaped a fielder's grasp and allowed him to score. Bill St. John doubled and then scored on a Dan McKee double to left. Port Perry was not as impressive in their other two games but they did stubborn- ly refuse to quit in each. Tournament director Doug Scott was pleased with the event's success. He attributed the high at- tendance "to good weather and good ball." PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 8, 1979 -- 19 -- wn Dean Beare beats out an infield hit during action between Canadian Tire and Sunderland Harvesters. Sunderland won the match 6-4 to knock Port Perry from further play.
